Bowling Green Municipal Utilities Receives Highest RP3® Award for Reliability

Bowling Green Municipal Utilities has earned a Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3)® designation from the American Public Power Association for providing reliable and safe electric service. The city has achieved this designation since 2011, with this being the second time the city has received the Diamond Level, which is the highest scoring category for the award.

The RP3 designation, which lasts for three years, recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate proficiency in four key disciplines: reliability, safety, workforce development, and system improvement. Criteria include sound business practices and a utility-wide commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Bowling Green Municipal Utilities joins more than 250 public power utilities nationwide that hold the RP3 designation.

“Receiving an RP3 designation is a great honor signifying a utility has demonstrated commitment to industry best practices,” said Jeremy Ash, Chair of APPA’s RP3 Review Panel and Chief Operating Officer at Kansas City Board of Public Utilities, Kansas. "And ultimately, the culture developed from this pursuit of excellence and continued improvement through the RP3 program results in measurable value delivered to the local community.”

“We are grateful to be honored with this designation,” said Brian O’Connell, Utilities Director. “This is the result of a lot of work from a lot of people who really care about powering our community. This award is not the end, we are committed to finding areas for improvement in our operations and service to our customers. Reliable electric service is one of the most important benchmarks in today’s world.”

Callery Pear Trees on Ohio's Invasive List

By this time of year, residents have probably noticed the fragrant (but not necessarily pleasant smelling) blossoms of the Callery pear trees throughout the city and neighboring communities.  Callery pear is a tree species that is highly invasive. An invasive species is a non-native species that causes harm to the environment, economy, human, animal, or plant health. Callery pear is particularly invasive because it spreads and reproduces so easily that it overtakes natural areas and chokes out other desirable native species. Cultivars and varieties of Callery pears include Cleveland select, Whitehouse, Bradford, among others.

Beginning in January 2023, Callery pear was added to the list of banned invasive plants in Ohio, making it illegal to produce, plant, or sell these trees in the state.

This species is dominating roadway medians, rights of way, and natural areas around the state and can be easily identified this time of year by the white, flowering blossoms. The new ban on the plant won’t stop the spread of the invasive plant, but it will help reduce further introduction.

The ban does not regulate existing plants, so residents should not panic if this tree is currently planted on their property. However, removal of existing trees will aid in the reduction of the spread of this plant. Over time, the City’s Arborist will be strategically removing, and replacing, Callery pears that are planted on City property and rights-of-way.

Defend Your Drains:

Toilets Aren't for Trash!

While it's possible to flush things like dental floss, hair, cotton swabs, cotton balls and condoms down the toilet, it's a bad idea. None of these items break down in water, and they can tangle with other items and block your sewer line. Just because something is used or dirty doesn't mean it should go down the toilet. Toss these items in the trash.

Never flush anything but(t) poop, pee, and (toilet) paper down your toilets, to help keep our drains flowing freely!
