Easy Weekends - Food by Neil Perry

Book review by Franz Scheurer

Styled by the inimitable Sue Fairlie-Cunninghame and photographed by the masterful Earl Carter, this book has instant appeal. It's solid, achievable and delectable weekend food, filling a gap in the cookbook market, showing you how easy it can be to wow your guests (or simply eat very well on your own).

The book is divided into:

Friday

Saturday

Sunday

With the usual acknowledgements and a good index at the back.

On Friday you could cook a simple Cream of Fennel Soup or maybe some Fried Eggs with spicy Tamarind Dressing. Something as simple as Spaghetti with Toasted Breadcrumbs is a sure winner with the kids and a Classic Pepper Steak will have the adults beside themselves.

On Saturday you might want to 'up the ante' a little and start your meal with Chopped Raw Beef with Jalapeo Salad and Bruschetta followed by a Blue Swimmer Crab Tagliatelle with Lemon and Chilli. As a light but superb main-course I would suggest the Crumbed Leatherjacket with Steamed Zucchini or the Buttermilk Fried Chook and finish the meal with a Greek-style Custard Tart. The pics look so good that I'm salivating by now...

On Sunday you probably want to take it a little easier; you deserved a day off, so I suggest you start with a simple breakfast of Poached Eggs with Yoghurt, Sage and Chilli or maybe Smoked Salmon with Poached Eggs. Have a Bloody Mary or a glass of Sparkling Red with it and you'll start the Sunday in style. For lunch I suggest the Moroccan Lamb Soup as this is a dish you can make ahead and simply heat up, no fuss there and equally non-labour intensive would be a dinner of Slow-roasted Shoulder of Lamb. A Bread and Butter Pudding will seal your Sunday and you all roll to bed happily.

To quote Neil Perry: Easy Weekends is a celebration of cooking at home and the place for food and drink in 'the good life'.

Jim Murray's WHISKY BIBLE 2013

Book review by Franz Scheurer

Jim Murray's Whisky Bible is always eagerly awaited by the 'dramers' the world over. It's the single most comprehensive guide of the whiskies fo the world by one man and let's not forget this, before you even think of criticising any of the entries.

Jim Murray does not seek public consensus; he does not seek popularity, he does however voice his opinion the way he sees it. Not only does this take a lot of guts, but it can be incredibly helpful if you manage to get inside Jim's head.

"Why?": That's a simple question with an even easier answer:

Because Jim is consistent in this praise and criticism!

So once you know Jim Murray's likes and dislikes you can interpret the guide to suit you! If you hate strong, white pepper notes you will know you avoid certain Taliskers and if you absolutely love extremely hot and potent cask strengths you might just adore that Port Charlotte of some of the Buffalo Trace offerings.

In his book, Jim Murray analyses over 4,500 whiskies from all around the world and to say that's a hell of an achievement is the understatement of the year.

Jim Murray: I salute you!

Vintec Australia releases "Noir" - new Borderless Black Glass design

Vintec Australia Pty Ltd, the leading specialist in climate-controlled wine cabinets, is unveiling on November 1st 2012 a total of 12 new models as part of 2 new ranges, available in Australia and New Zealand in time for Xmas.

The two new ranges have been designed in association with Australian architects and interior designers to achieve a new purity of design - with no visible handles and new minimalistic glass door designs:

* "Noir" series - featuring a chic and sophisticated Borderless Black Glass door and Crystal White LED lighting

* "Seamless Stainless Steel" series - featuring a new modern and understated seamless door trim and the Vintec 'Signature Blue' LED lighting

The new lines will all be equipped with R600a cooling gas which is more energy-efficient than the current standard R134a and which also has zero ozone-depleting properties.

The new Vintec models are built with the same capacities and dimensions as the existing ranges: two 30-bottle freestanding units, six 40-bottle under bench wine and beer bars (single and dual zone models), and three large capacity 166-170 bottle cellars. A new 40-bottle integrated/in-column wine cabinet is also part of the "Seamless Stainless Steel" series.

The release of the new ranges follows a series of initiatives by Vintec to provide better service, expertise and added value to its customers. Most noticeable was the creation of The Vintec Club in June 2012 - with wine industry partners Langton's and Riedel - to encourage wine lovers to learn more about cellaring, collecting and serving their prized drops.

Owners of Vintec and Transtherm cellars can become members of this private club at no cost and enjoy complimentary wine services and benefits.
