Last weekend I had the opportunity to meet with others on the Area 10 Board of Directors as we worked on the 2014 conference as well as other aspects of the operations of the area. It is always such a joy to work with so many great people dedicated to advancing the musical art of handbell/handhime ringing through education, community and communication.
For the 2014 conference June 27-29 in Yakima, Washington, please note below that the deadline for submitting All-Star Choir audition materials has been extended to February 15, 2014. I hope many of you will audition for this choir that will be under the direction of David Harris. There is so much being offered at the conference for handbell musicians at all levels. Please be sure to read all about it by clicking either the link in the conference article below or by simply clicking here. The Music repertoire is always available through that article or here.
Last month the newsletter came out under a new address. If you have not already done so, please  add it to your address book. It is the same as listed under my name below,
Remember to forward this to members of your choir and encourage them to join the list. You can update your information by clicking "Update Profile/Email Address" at the very bottom of the newsletter on the left.

Greetings Handbell Musicians.

With my article this month, I'd like to take this opportunity to address some of the feedback the board has received in regard to the 2014 Area 10 Musicality in Motion Conference planned for next June.  As a board, we always appreciate feedback, and will strive to do what we can to address any comments from you, our membership.  In some cases, we're able to make an immediate change which can benefit the area.  In other cases, the feedback gives us something to consider longer term as we plan future events.

The first piece of feedback is in regard to site selection and how it impacts the registration cost of the event.  Since being on the board, I have found that perhaps the most challenging aspect of organizing an event as large as an Area 10 Conference is finding a suitable venue.  We chose the Yakima Convention Center for our 2014 event primarily because it meets our needs and doesn't present as many logistical challenges in an event where we are making some significant changes to the format.  A college campus would have been less expensive, but would have presented a number of other challenges, including having enough floor space for massed ringing, scheduling around athletic events, having enough dorm rooms for housing, having a large enough area for meals, and the amount of walking required during the day.

With all that said, this does not mean we won't consider college campuses or other types of venues for future events.  Since we typically have to reserve facilities 2-3 years in advance, it would not be practical for us to change the location of our 2014 event, but we have already started the planning process of our 2016 event.  We would be open to any input you have in regard to conference location and any suggestions for a venue you think we should be giving consideration.

The second piece of feedback we've received is in regard to the auditions for the All-Star Choir.  Since the process requires a video and letters of recommendation, the feedback was that the November 15th deadline is too aggressive.  We have decided to extend this deadline by three months, giving anyone interested until February 15th to submit audition materials.  We believe that the All-Star Choir will be one of the highlights of our 2014 conference, both for those who are in the group and for the rest of us who have the opportunity to hear their performance.  It is my hope that extending the deadline will make it practical for more folks to complete the audition process.

Thank you to those who have provided this feedback and other feedback.  We take all your comments seriously and make adjustments when appropriate.  If any of you have further suggestions on how we as the Area 10 Board can serve you better, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us.  Our contact information is included with every edition of the Campanologist and on

THANK YOU! Handchime Emissaries!
handchimes What is a Handchime Emissary? It's someone who enthusiastically goes out of their way to help transition our Area 10 Handchime Loan Program handchimes from last year's recipients to their new recipients.

Oregon's Handchime Loan Program wishes to THANK these emissaries:

Washington State Chair, Jennifer Vangolen and Education Coordinator Wendy McPhetres.  Oregon had three requests to borrow the chimes this year but has only two sets to loan - one Malmark and one Schulmerich.  Washington had one request this year.  Thanks to Jennifer and Wendy, the chimes crossed the border to support a music education program in Oregon and this means they will not have to spend a year in storage.  Great use of Area 10 resources!

Nancy Davis - Resident of Renton, WA (and a former ringer in one of Shosh Meyer's handbell ensembles) delivered Washington's Malmark chimes to Oregon Chair Shosh Meyer in Beaverton while on a trip to Portland.  This is yet another reminder that it is wise to keep good relationships with former bell ringers even when they move miles away --- you never know WHEN that friendship will support a handbell program.

Joy Frisbie, a devoted and enthusiastic handbell musician at St. Matthew Lutheran in Beaverton who works in Keizer, hand delivered the Washington chimes to our Salem-Keizer recipient, Christine Sinibaldi, teacher in the school district.  Rendezvous point - a Fred Meyer's gas station at 9:00 p.m.

Diane Barnes and Cyndy Patterson delivered the Oregon Malmark chimes to our Portland recipient, Ellie Hodder, who will use them in her work with her Clackamas Community College Continuing Education Senior Program.  Diane and Cyndy attended the annual September Pacific Northwest Handbell Directors Forum coordinated by Ellie. A perfect way to coordinate a handoff!

Phyllis Devine, from Rainier, Oregon and a home school educator is Oregon's Schulmerich handchimes recipient.  She offered her husband as emissary.  Phyllis' husband works in the Beaverton area and he made the trip to nearby St. Matthew to pick up the chimes and curriculum.  (By the way --- members of the Devine family play in the Columbia River Handbells with conductor, Rod Lloyd, Webmaster for the Area 10 website.)
