Pacific Northwest Youth Handbell Festival
Friday & Saturday
 March 25-26, 2011
Pine Lake Covenant Church
Sammamish, WA
Kath Wissinger, clinician

//Attention: Young Ringers of Area 10 (and their directors)

Area 10's Pacific Northwest Youth Handbell Festival is waiting for your Early Bird Registration, and the perks are here and ready for you to use! Throughout the month of February (1-28) the registration cost is $55 per ringer. Between March 1 & 20, the cost increases to $65. Ten dollars isn't that much for one person, but multiplied by the number of ringers in your group the amount escalates. (I guess bird feed is getting more costly - I don't know about this phrase but it came to mind.) I'd suggest putting that extra green into your transportation. Chaperone meals (1 per 5 youth) are $9 (lunch) and $12 (dinner) and they have no further registration cost.

Our clinician, Kathleen Wissinger, is excited to come out west to turn your efforts into gems of musicality. You will enjoy her pleasant personality and enthusiasm that she shares with her own young ringers. Guaranteed, you will learn something new!

Complete information is on the registration form, available through the Area 10 website (www.area10agehr.org) or at the top of the article. You may contact Alice Lewis alicelewis@motorplex.com or 425 432 0366 if you have questions. As registrations arrive, you will receive a packet of detailed information along with your receipt.

     Y'all come!

It's 2011 and we are gearing up for the final stretch toward the Greater Puget Sound Handbell Festival. The final plans are being put into place. Washington members should have received information, including a registration form, in the mail by now! If you are not from Washington and want to come participate in our handbell festival, you, of course, are more than welcome! Contact Wendy McPhetres (WKMCP@aol.com) for more information! Be sure to turn those registration forms in right away, so that you get priority places in the ringing space! Our clinician, Debbie Rice, is very excited to come to Seattle to work with all of you!

We are excited at class opportunities this year. Some class highlights include:

  • Playing without Pain - taught by an amazing physical therapist by day/an amazing handbell ringer by night.
  • Theory 101-This will help you understand the basics of harmony, scales, where key signatures come from, how music is structured, etc.
  • Intro to Arranging - come experience the basics of writing your own simple hymn arrangements! Taught by AGEHR's composition contest WINNER, Ron Mallory!!
  • Score Study and Bell Assigning - taught by our own Area 10 Chair-Elect, Brian Tervo!
  • Team Building the Hooked on Handbells Way taught by our own Marlene Anderson
  • How to be a Better Ringer - a popular class at many festivals!
  • Several technique classes will be offered including, weaving, treble techniques and bass techniques
  • Malmark and Schulmerick maintenance
  • An ensemble class - stay tuned for more information on how to participate in this!

The Desert Rings

Bells of the Sound and the Desert Bells are teaming up to execute The Desert Ring in Richland, WA, on Saturday, May 14. This year, handbell choirs will choose to be in Tins or Coppers as well as perform in a mass ring, directed by Bells of the Sound's director, Shirley Lindberg. This is a great opportunity for ringers in Eastern Washington, Idaho, and Northeast Oregon to come together for some great ringing and learn more skills in classes given by capable instructors! We look forward to a 2nd successful Desert Ring!

Columbia River Celebration of Bells

Here's a wonderful new opportunity for your handbell group to perform for a large audience at The PAC of Wenatchee (Performing Arts Center of Wenatchee)!

Columbia River Celebration of Bells

Date: Saturday, May 14

Location: The Performing Arts Center (PAC) of Wenatchee

123 N. Wenatchee Ave., Wenatchee, WA 98801

Time: 7:00 pm

Sponsored by: The Wenatchee Valley Appleaires

Sign up time: Now!

This brand new festival is designed to promote the joy of handbell ringing and the opportunity to network with other enthusiastic handbell choirs and directors. Each group will have their own performance space and time for setting up their tables and bells prior to the program. Each group will have a scheduled rehearsal time before the program in their designated spot in The PAC.

Song titles will be submitted as soon as possible by the handbell directors to ensure no repetition of songs. We'll share this information as we receive it so all groups will be kept up to date and aware of the selected music. We encourage groups to play favorites from their current repertoire of secular and/or sacred music, as desired.

Audition tapes or CDs will be needed, including at least 2 pieces from a recent performance. We expect to have four to six handbell choirs perform for up to 15 minutes each. Adult and children's choirs are most welcome. We encourage creativity and individual expression. Groups must provide their own tables and all other instruments and materials needed.

If you are short a ringer but would still like to participate, there will very likely be ringers available from other groups who will happily stand in and play, as needed. Please communicate this need when you're signing up, or as soon as possible before the concert, so we can be better prepared to assist you.

We'd like to have 3 mass ringing numbers, and we'll determine those numbers with the assistance of the directors, as soon as possible. Music may be suggested from each group's current repertoire. Copies will be shared as allowed by copyright laws. There will be a mass ringing rehearsal just prior to the program, under one or two directors.

After festival expenses, ticket proceeds go to the Appleaires Music Scholarship Fund. The Appleaires will not charge event entrance fees for performing choirs. The Appleaires will provide a mid day potluck meal for participants and participants' guests. Questions are welcome! Thank You, Judy Kelts

To sign up ASAP write Judy Kelts at dkeltsj@aol.com, or call her at 951-769-3615 before March 16, and at 509-884-7218 after March 18. Audition tapes or CDs should be mailed as soon as possible to Shellie James at 28 Columbia Siding Rd., Rock Island, WA 98850.

I am always open to feedback on this newsletter. Various email servers cause the newsletter to change somewhat in appearance so the exact layout of what you see might not be what someone else sees. A test to my home email and also to the gmail account at the very bottom come through different. I think that is just the nature of the email style of the newsletter.
Remember to send information for the March issue to me by February 20.
