Here are a few updates to pass along this week.
"Buck Up for Recycling" Program
St. Louis City Recycles is offering in-home recycling bins for just a $1 donation in an effort to encourage more city residents to keep items out of the refuse Dumpsters.
Through the "Buck Up for Recycling" program, residents pledge to recycle their household paper, cardboard, glass and most plastics. Program representatives will attend neighborhood meetings in the coming year to explain the program's goals and to distribute the bins.
There is a limit of one bin per household, and they will be available while supplies last.
St. Louis Recycles is sponsored by the City in partnership with
Brightside St. Louis
, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management.
Kingshighway Bridge to Open in April
While work on the South Grand bridge over I-44 is nearly complete, to the relief of area commuters, the Missouri Department of Transportation says we will have to wait a while longer to use the new Kingshighway bridge.
MoDOT had hoped to have four lanes open by the end of December, but announced this week that reconstruction work will not reach that stage until April 2017. The bridge closed in July 2015, with work projected to take up to two years at a cost of $21 million.
Ultimately, the new bridge will have six traffic lanes and safe, wide sidewalks for pedestrians. I'm sure we are all looking forward to being able to get around more easily in the new year.
Turn Porch Lights on for Safety
For safety's sake, please remember to turn on your porch light after dark. Energy-efficient light bulbs and simple dusk-to-dawn timers can reduce costs and make the process automatic. Having your porch light on helps with visibility on these dark winter evenings, and signals to would-be criminals that people may be home and keeping an eye out for their neighbors.
Thanks for all you do to make the 15th Ward in St. Louis a wonderful place to call home. It's an honor to serve as your Alderwoman.
