AAICU Thanks Alabama Legislators for Supporting Independent College Students

Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (AAICU) would like to express gratitude to the Alabama legislature for their continuing support of independent college students. Both grant programs that affect AAICU students enjoyed significant increases. The Alabama Student Grant Program (ASGP) had a $1M increase to $9M. The ASGP provides grant-in-aid to Alabama residents who select an independent institution in the State. This "tuition equalization grant” was established in 1978 by an act of the Alabama Legislature.

The Alabama Student Assistance Program (ASAP) also had a $1M increase to $9M. ASAP is a need-based, state grant ranging from $300 to $5,000 per academic year. Eligible students are undergraduate students who are Alabama residents attending eligible Alabama institutions. Nearly 80 Alabama institutions participate in the program.

Dr. Yolanda W. Page Named President of Stillman College

The Stillman College Board of Trustees selected Dr. Yolanda W. Page as the institution’s eighth president at its May 4 meeting.Page currently serves as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Savannah State University and will begin her tenure at Stillman on July 1.

She will succeed Dr. Cynthia Warrick, who has served as president at Stillman since 2017. Warrick announced her retirement in the fall of 2022.

Page has more than 30 years of higher education experience in a variety of faculty and leadership roles. Prior to her post at Savannah State, she served as vice president in the Division of Academic Affairs and professor of English at Dillard University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree.

Page has received numerous awards, including the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) Chief Academic Officer Award (2020). Additionally, Diverse: Issues in Higher Education recognized her as one of 25 outstanding women in higher education (2017). She has completed leadership development programs with the American Council on Education, CIC, and the Millennial Leadership Institute.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to lead Stillman College, and I thank the board of trustees for its confidence in me to lead this storied institution,” Page said.

Page said Stillman’s institutional profile – a close-knit, private HBCU – mirrors her undergraduate experience as a first-generation college student and attracted her to pursue the presidency at Stillman.

“I knew Stillman would be the right place to make the type of impact I’ve strived to make in my career and, ultimately, I’d like to continue to make as a president [at Stillman],” she said. “That impact is grounded in student, faculty, and staff success and providing each of those groups with the tools and the access to resources that will allow them to grow and achieve what they feel are their missions in life.”

Page holds bachelor’s degrees in English and business management from Dillard and both a master’s degree and doctor of philosophy in American and African American literature from Louisiana State University.

Huntingdon College Educator Preparation Programs Earn National Accreditation

Huntingdon College’s Educator Preparation Programs, housed in the Department of Teacher Education, have earned national accreditation by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Department chair Dr. Carolyn Corliss, professor of teacher education, was notified earlier this month, following a months-long process of preparation and review that concluded in fall 2022.“CAEP is the Gold Star for educator preparation program (EPP) accreditation,” said Dr. Corliss. “CAEP accreditation is assurance through external peer review that the College has demonstrated that it meets standards set by organizations representing the academic community, professionals, and other stakeholders. CAEP accreditation provides a framework that pushes EPPs to self-assess and to conduct evidence-based analysis of their programs’ efficacy on a continual basis. These evidence-based shifts, rooted in continuous improvement, are helping to ensure that educator preparation programs are more likely to produce successful educators.”

The process of accreditation review and assessment involved meeting the following seven standards: content and pedagogical knowledge; clinical partnerships and practice; candidate recruitment, progression, and support; program impact; quality assurance system and continuous improvement; fiscal and administrative capacity; and record of compliance with Title IV of the Higher Education Act.

Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine Welcomed 58 New Doctors of Veterinary Medicine into Profession

The Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine (TUCVM) welcomed 58 new doctors of veterinary medicine into the profession on May 6 during the Graduate and Professional Schools formal ceremony in Chappie James Arena. But it was the Veterinary Medicine Oath ceremony that held the most excitement for the graduates.

With this graduation, the 74th in the history of the College of Veterinary Medicine, it has now awarded 3,021 veterinary medicine degrees from the only veterinary medical professional program on the campus of a Historically Black College or University.

"I am honored to have served as the dean to this Class of 2023 and it is with gladness of heart that I look forward to engaging with my colleagues as they now join me in a most distinguished group of veterinary professionals and veterinary alumni," said Dr. Ruby Perry, Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine during the oath and hooding ceremony. “The College of Veterinary Medicine family is extremely proud of each graduate and we look forward to hearing about the accomplishments they will make as veterinary professionals, as leaders, as educators, and as researchers. They are well-equipped to make significant contributions and play vital roles in protecting and enhancing human and animal welfare as they embark on their various career paths on a journey of lifelong learning beyond the DVM degree. Miles College to Offer Summer Programs for Birmingham Students

Middle-school and high-school students in Birmingham City Schools will have an opportunity this summer to earn college credit and attend summer camps at the historic Miles College, thanks to a new partnership approved recently by the Birmingham Board of Education.

The school district is funding all registration and fees for its students to attend Summer Bear’s Den programs at Miles. The programs will focus on academics and will give students exposure to a college campus.

Dr. Mark Sullivan, superintendent of Birmingham City Schools, described the Miles College partnership as part of a robust lineup of summer programs available to Birmingham City Schools students.

“This opportunity will benefit our scholars on so many levels,” Sullivan said. “We are offering academic experiences beyond the typical classroom. We welcome this new partnership with Miles, an institution with a rich history when it comes to preparing leaders.”

Dr. Tonya Perry, Miles College vice provost, developed the programs in consultation with Birmingham City Schools. Options include math, reading and writing camps for middle-schoolers and today several high school students started dual enrollment courses in English.

The programs are designed not just to teach students, but to inspire them and motivate them to continue to learn and achieve, Miles officials said. Part of the middle-school camp, for example, includes an e-gaming component. Miles College Provost Dr. Jarralynne Agee, said e-gaming can help keep students engaged in learning about technology and other academics.

Board of Education members said they are pleased with the new partnership with Miles College.
