LOOKING AND FEELING GOOD, FROM THE INSIDE OUT
Tips from nationally recognized makeup artist, Barbra Jo Batterman

Hello barbra Jo,

Happy New Year everyone and hope 2023 is treating you well so far.

Just completed my work for CES (Consumer Electronics Show) and happy to report that Vegas is fully back with award shows, conventions, sporting events and more,so very much back to normal with makeup and styling work. Hopefully things are back to somewhat normal with all of you as well.

I had to share the pic above, along with the fun story that goes along with it.

Me and my husband were two of the casualties of the Southwest Airlines fiasco at the end of December when we travelled to San Francisco. Our flight back to Vegas was cancelled and reschedule mutliple times, but never got off the ground. As I had to get back for work, we looked at renting a car, along with the hundreds of others who were doing the same thing.

We finally made it to the front of the line and were fortunate enough to rent a vehicle. While waiting in line, we met this young couple (Lynn and Rick, seen above) who had just gotten married and were traveling to Vegas for part of their honeymoon. In the holiday mood, we invited them to come along with us on the drive to Vegas and spent the next 12 hours in the car with this beautiful Korean couple. It was a great way to end the year, and put a smile on our faces as much as it did theirs.

Love to all of you and best wishes for the year ahead.

Love and friendship,

Barbra Jo Batterman

TRAILBLAZING FOR MAKE-A-WISH

I'm at it again, training for what is becoming an annual event for me, helping to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the kids who could use some positive light while facing a critical illness.

Last year my friends, family and those of you here, helped me surpass my goal, which in turn helped fund wishes for some deserving children in Southern Nevada.

I started training a couple of months ago for the trek that will take place February 3-5 at the beautiful Valley of Fire State Park. It's a 26.2 mile hike, all for a good cause and I'm thrilled to be able to do it.

If you would like to support me, but more importantly support these deserving kids, following this link and donate whatever you can. I'll report on how I do and the money I was able to raise in the next newsletter, all because of my generous friends and supporters.

MEN - START YOUR YEAR OFF ON THE RIGHT TRACK

This is for all the men who work behind the scenes and constantly ask me for advice (not to mention names...Marc).

I was looking at the January issue of Men's Health, and saw a great article about looking fresh for the new year. While I couldn't find a public link to the article (seems you need to be a subscriber), I thought I would give my own advice based on the men I groom, work with and make up on a monthly basis.

Find a good...

  • Tailor - you don't have to be into fashion to look good, just find a good tailor who can fit you correctly with the clothes you do have. Shirts, pants, suits, etc. can all look shabby if they aren't properly fitted. Trust me, it is worth the investment and people will notice!
  • Barber or stylist - No offense to the countless discount hair establishments, but you're not going to find educated barbers or stylists there who can determine the best styles for your hair, face shape, age, occupation and type of hair (or beard). Worth finding a good barber or stylist who has the education to help you look your best.

Make these your daily habits:

  • Sunscreen - yes, everyday, no matter the season. I personally like those by EltaMD or LaRoche-Posay, but the best one for you is the one you will use most often. Make this a purchase during that next Target run, or wherever you shop for your everyday items.
  • Conditioner - too many men shampoo their hair without using a daily conditioner. Conditioner is needed to help with shine, strength, preventing static and helping with split ends. You don't need the most expensive brand, just get something you will use. The Men's Health article recommends Dove Men+Care REAL Revitalize Conditioner for $8.

Try this once a week:

  • Exfoliate - Dead skin cells build up, on your face, neck, back, legs, feet and more. Find a light exfoliator for your face and something a little heavier for your body. Kiehl's, Brickell and Jack Black are brands I recommend.
  • Embrace the bath - that's right, take an evening once a week and relieve the tension and soreness from working out or just a tough week at work by soaking in a bath. I know a lot of men who soak in Epsom salts, but any type of bath oil, bubble bath or bath salts will do. Just sit back and enjoy.

MAKEUP TRENDS FOR THE NEW YEAR

It's part of my job to follow the trends, but I always suggest to my friends, colleagues and clients to take what you want from them, keeping in mind you should always be true to who you are and your comfort level with experimentation.

For 2023, one of the biggest trends to emerge is soft goth and the '90s nudes, both that were trends years ago. While I haven't seen the show yet, think Wednesday Addams from the new Netflix show, Wednesday. Smoky plums, browns and burgundies with a soft smoky shadow on the lash line is the focus of soft goth. If you haven't yet tried Victoria Beckham's Satin Kajal Liner (comes in a lot of colors and is an easy blend), now is definitely the time, especially for lining the water line.

On the other end of the spectrum are nude tones in cool shades. Pair shades of brown on the eyes, baby pink blush with a slightly mauve or nude lip. Think "sexy bombshell" for this look which is easy to pull off at any age.

Multi-use products continue to be popular, with one product working for cheeks and lips, and sometimes even on the eyes. Nars, RMS, Pixi and Ilia are all brands that jumped on this trend last year with more coming onboard. It saves money, takes up less space on your makeup counter and looks great with the right shade.

Pink will be everywhere in 2023 (eyes, cheeks and lips) and K-beauty continues to be hot for skinkcare, as most of us continue to want clean products that are great for our skin. Great skincare is key and more important than any makeup trend I can share with you.

I think back to 30+ years ago when I could count on two hands the brands I I would use or share with my clients. Also, at that time no one though to look at the ingredients or care what was in our products. Now there are hundreds if not thousands of beauty lines and what goes on top of our skin has become just as important as what we eat.

We've come a long way, baby!

GETTING RID OF THAT PEACH FUZZ

Most of us who have unwanted hair on our face are always looking for a fix, whether it's laser hair removal, waxing or newer methods, such as dermaplaning.

I'm sure you've seen TV commericals or read articles of the many devices you can use at home, or many of you go to your aesthician to have an expert who is fully trained in the dermaplaning procedure.

I just heard about a new device that I'm looking to try this week, from Dermaflash. It's pricey ($199), however I've seen and felt the results, and they are amazing. The product uses award-winning technology to safely and gently exfoliate the dead skin cells and getting rid of the unwanted peach fuzz. You can read more about it and watch some videos here.

For a less expensive option, you can use Finishing Touch Flawless Facial Hair Removal for $17 on Amazon, but if you can splurge, you might want the higher-end option.
