Dear Colleagues,

During the week of November 11, nearly 1,000 educators from across New York State attended the November Network Team Institute (NTI) hosted at the Cultural Education Center in Albany. The educators in attendance included: all network teams; representatives from the Big 5 city school districts; all 37 BOCES; and 15 professional organizations.

The November Institute focused on further preparing teachers and leaders to implement their district/school's curriculum strategy. Learners deepened their understanding of the ELA and Math instructional Shifts by examining curricular resources developed by the New York State Education Department. I hope you will use these resources as you continue to implement Common Core instruction in your classrooms.

Last week, a New York Times editorial, "Advertisements for the Common Core," observed that places that are ahead of us in implementing more rigorous teacher and principal evaluation systems and that are moving forward strongly with the Common Core standards, Tennesee and Washington DC, had the strongest growth on the NAEP exams this year. The reforms are working, and they'll work in New York. I am very encouraged by the Common Core work I have seen happening in classrooms across the state this fall.

Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to New York's students.

Sincerely,
John B. King, Jr.

During College Application Week, high school seniors at New York City's Humanities Preparatory Academy participated in a week of activities and worked with volunteers to submit their college applications. They were joined by over 2,700 students around the state who benefited from week-long activities at pilot sites. New York State joined 30 states in the American College Application Campaign's national effort to ensure high school seniors apply to at least one post secondary institution during College Application Week.

cteEarly Elementary Assessments
For the purposes of APPR, there are no K-2 standardized tests administered or required by the State. Decisions about how to measure student progress in K-2 are made by local school districts and BOCES. Education Law 3012-c provides districts and BOCES with design flexibility and assessment options. The Early Elementary Assessments document is intended for districts and BOCES seeking opportunities to reduce and/or refine assessments used in early elementary grades and subjects. Please read the Early Elementary Assessments document for more information.
