From the President - Questions that matter.
Asked by Rick McKenna, CEO of Atlantic Strategies and
President of BABCNE.
What will the US election this November mean for businesses that want to expand into the UK, or for UK businesses that want to come here? The UK election takes place on July 4, how will the result impact economic ties, hiring, or taxes?
Social Media can be a powerfully divisive influence, or a channel for good, around the world. Legislation to ban TikTok in the US isn’t the only political and legal headwind to social media. How will governments in the US and UK limit access, define content, and force changes?
The promise of A.I. (artificial intelligence) has many organizations diving deep into these new and powerful tools. There are real safety concerns that Hollywood movie writers imagined decades ago. But other challenges beyond the extinction of the human race exist such as huge demands for electricity and computing power. How can SMEs make the best decisions to invest in and embrace these new tools in a manner that is safe for humankind and operationally affordable?
Amazing breakthroughs in biotechnology need to be funded, tested, regulated and marketed to businesses and consumers on both sides of the pond where rules may be very different. How can a start-up biotech company stay current with the rules and regulations and build growth partnerships that can accelerate time to market? How do companies recruit and retain talent in competitive markets?
Demographics are changing in both nations both in pure population numbers and cultural diversity. The cost to attend schools of higher education are widely different in the US versus the UK. Demand for specific majors is moving away from the classics to majors that are the practical. How do transplants navigate the education systems?
These questions and many more can be addressed by tapping into a professional and social network of helpful and friendly people. Some network members are from government. Others are part of the diplomatic corp. And even more are innovators, entrepreneurs, operators, educators, servicer providers and even some young at heart retired pros.
To get answers and get to know great people, join and become active in the BABCNE, membership has never been more relevant. You can even tap into chapters across the US and UK, not just in the big cities. The questions are many, but with our combined experiences, there’s nothing we can’t handle, regardless of who wins the elections.

From the British Consulate
|
|
In May Consul General Dr. Peter Abbott travelled to London to receive his OBE from Princess Anne – awarded for his efforts through the pandemic while leading a massive team based in Islamabad, Pakistan and repatriating thousands of UK nationals home to the UK.
Farewell: Dr. Abbott leaves Boston in July to return to the UK after an amazing four years in Boston – joining in the first year of the pandemic where no events were able to be held and transitioning into a fully functioning environment, bringing the Consulate back to full productivity and enjoying the wide variety of experiences the region has to offer.
He and Lindsey will be sorely missed by all in the Consulate, the NE Anglophile and business
community!
|
|
More than 140 members of the Consulate’s Boston Biotech Brits network gathered at the VentureCafe for networking and the enjoyment of British meat pies and cheese.
|
|
With a rousing welcome from Deputy Consul General Nicola Moss and great talk by event sponsor Quotient Sciences, participants enjoyed making connections and accessing Consulate staff for future business development discussions.

The UK has become the world’s fourth largest exporter, but can it maintain this momentum?
The Conversation, May 2, 2024
UK Export figures are driven by services. UK business is beaming with pride with the recent news of the country’s emergence as the fourth largest exporter in the world based on the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development report. The UK jumped three places in 2022, surpassing France, the Netherlands and Japan.
This pride is justified, as there have been many challenges along the way, especially in the wake of Brexit, when the UK found itself redefining its economic landscape. With the dust settling from its EU departure, combined with COVID disruption, the UK was embarking on an uncertain journey.
But with the newfound autonomy, the UK decided to chart its own course in the international space. The break from the EU trading bloc meant a departure from established trade agreements and regulations, leading to a revaluation of economic policies and partnerships.

On April 19, 2024, the Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security (“BIS”) published an interim final rule (“Interim Rule”), amending the Export Administration Regulations (“EAR”) to enhance cooperation and technological innovation between the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom (“UK”) pursuant to the AUKUS Trilateral Security Partnership (“AUKUS”).
The full text of the Interim Rule is available here. Among other changes, the Interim Rule removes license requirements and reduces the scope of end-use and end-user-based license requirements for exports, reexports, and transfers (in-country) to or within Australia and the UK.
