Reopened solar rebate program gives multi-family buildings sustainability boost

June 25, 2024

The City of Edmonton’s Change Homes for Climate Solar Rebate Program will reopen to provide financial incentives to multi-unit residential properties that install rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. By reducing upfront installation costs, Edmonton is taking a major step toward achieving its climate goals while fostering a more equitable energy transition by making the benefits of solar energy more accessible to people historically underserved by renewable energy initiatives.

"By making solar energy accessible to a wider range of residents, especially those living in multi-unit buildings, we're ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to benefit from affordable renewable energy,” said Councillor Michael Janz. “This is about equity and ensuring that all our communities can participate in, and benefit from, our energy transition."

The $1.3 million in rebates will be available to properties with four or more permitted dwellings, and will be administered on a first-come, first-serve basis while funds remain available. Applications open July 2 and eligible systems must be installed with details submitted by December 16, 2024.

Harnessing solar energy lowers Edmonton’s carbon footprint, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment for everyone. The program also supports local businesses in the renewable energy sector, fostering job creation and economic growth within the city.

"Reopening the Change Homes for Climate Solar Rebate Program for multi-unit residential properties, contributes to Edmonton’s climate goals and enhances our climate resilience,” said Branch Manager Kent Snyder. “By making solar energy more accessible, we are not only reducing carbon emissions and saving money on utility bills, but we are also building a robust renewable sector and green economy that will serve our city for generations to come."

The City of Edmonton invites all eligible multi-unit residential property owners to take advantage of this opportunity to invest in solar energy, reduce their energy costs and contribute to a greener and more sustainable Edmonton.
