Nine Edmonton schools awarded Bike Parking Grant

July 10, 2024

The City of Edmonton is pleased to announce that nine schools have been awarded the School Bike Parking Grant. The selected schools represent a diverse range of locations around the city and include both the Edmonton Catholic School District (ECSD) and Edmonton Public School Board (EPSB).

The schools receiving the School Bike Parking Grant are:

  • Athlone School
  • Balwin School
  • JJ Bowlen Catholic Junior High School
  • Lillian Osborne High School
  • Lorelei School
  • M.E. LaZerte High School
  • Spruce Avenue School
  • St. Benedict Catholic Elementary School
  • St. Lucy Catholic Elementary School

The School Bike Parking Grant launched earlier this year to encourage and facilitate students’ and families’ commute to and from schools. The grant supports schools to build secure, reliable bike parking that makes active transportation options more convenient. The project plans the schools shared with the City were unique and inspiring.

“The grant will help increase secure bike parking solutions to help students cycling to and from school, ” said Shewkar Ibrahim, Director of Traffic Operations at the City of Edmonton. “Improved bike parking options at schools makes active transportation options possible for students and families.”

Grant funding requests were between $500 - $15,000 with a total of $75,000 awarded. 39 schools applied and an evaluation matrix was used to assess the applications. The matrix considered criteria such as the proportion of students within a 2 to 3 km radius of the school, proximity and connectivity to the active transportation network, demonstrated need for the grant and plans to promote active travel and integrate cycling into school programs.

The grant supports The City Plan’s goal of making 50 per cent of trips completed by transit and active forms of transportation. Increasing bike parking is one way the City is supporting this goal. Guided by the Bike Plan, the City is also expanding the active transportation network, improving wayfinding, coordinating education and encouragement programs and more.

As part of the funding agreement, grant recipients will report project outcomes to the City which allows the City to evaluate the impact that this approach has on supporting sustainable and active modes of travel.
