Get your swimsuits out and your sunscreen on—the City’s beloved Mill Creek Outdoor Pool is newly renovated and reopening for summer fun on Monday, July 8 at 12 p.m.
Edmontonians will enjoy improved accessibility into the pool, thanks to its zero-depth entry. Other additions include a waterslide, new inclusive change rooms and washrooms, and signage throughout the facility.
Programming at Mill Creek will now include Deep Water Aquafit classes, registered Learn-to-Swim programs and public swim. To learn more and for scheduling, visit movelearnplay.edmonton.ca. There is also a concession on-site selling snacks, cold treats and swimming essentials.
“Mill Creek Outdoor Pool is perfectly situated just off Whyte Avenue in Mill Creek Ravine,” said Mayor Amarjeet Sohi. “Mill Creek pool is not just a pool—it is a destination, a community connector and a place where many amazing memories have been made. It has always been beloved by residents and visitors. With this rehabilitation, we know this pool will continue to serve Edmontonians.”
“We know that Edmontonians love spending as much time as possible outdoors during our beautiful summer months,” said Councillor Michael Janz. “There’s no better way to cool down on a hot summer day than at one of our outdoor pools with your family and friends.”
Nestled in Mill Creek Ravine, the outdoor pool first opened on June 22, 1953. The pool closed in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It remained closed to comply with new Alberta pool standards. Rehabilitation and maintenance began in August 2022, extending the pool’s lifespan and improving accessibility and safety for users.
Many aspects of the rehabilitation may go unnoticed. Work done “below the surface” includes the installation of anti-entrapment drains and upgrading and replacing the filtration, disinfection, mechanical and electrical systems to ensure Mill Creek Outdoor Pool aligns with current building codes and health and safety standards.
The City operates five outdoor pools — Borden Natural Swimming Pool, Mill Creek, Queen Elizabeth, Fred Broadstock and Wîhkwêntôwin (formerly Oliver) Outdoor Pools.
Operating hours are subject to change, and pools may close due to inclement weather. Check Facility Notifications for the latest outdoor pool status. The status is updated daily at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The City of Edmonton follows best practices with respect to aquatic safety and is committed to providing a safe and fun experience for everyone who uses aquatic facilities. Visit the Recreation Facility Safety Guidelines webpage for more information on how to stay safe in and around the water.
