City adds new water bottle-filling stations

June 10, 2024

The City of Edmonton announced its latest expansion of a water bottle-filling program to support vulnerable Edmontonians during extreme heat.

Twenty-seven stations across Edmonton are open to the public until September 30. The sites were selected based on engagement with communities, businesses and agencies. The expansion aligns with the City's policies to work with front line agencies to help vulnerable people during extreme weather.

First launched with five stations in 2021, the Water Bottle Filling Stations Program has grown every year. These new installations complement the 24 permanent water fountains located throughout Edmonton’s transit centres and LRT stations.

"The expansion of the Water Bottle Filling Stations Program is crucial in our efforts to safeguard our city's most vulnerable residents,” said Hani Quan, Director of Affordable Housing and Homelessness. “By enhancing the accessibility of safe, free potable drinking water, we are addressing a key need for those most at risk during extreme heat conditions."

"Cyclists and outdoor workers are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat, as they often face direct sun exposure for prolonged periods,” said Councillor Ashley Salvador, Ward Metis. “Providing accessible water stations is essential for keeping these groups hydrated and safe during the hottest days. This initiative highlights our commitment to promoting a healthy, active lifestyle while safeguarding the well-being of our community during heatwaves."

"Extreme heat disproportionately affects several vulnerable groups within our community, including children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities,” said Councillor Anne Stevenson, Ward O’Daymin. “These groups may struggle to access essential resources. The expanded Water Bottle Filling Stations Program is crucial in ensuring these residents are not deprived of the basic necessities of life during the scorching summer months.”
