Public engagement for the Town-owned portion of the lands known as the ‘Bus Garage’ will officially launch with a pop-up event at the Farmers Market on September 23.
The Town, in partnership with PWL Partnership Landscape Architects, will be creating a conceptual design for the strategic site in the heart of Qualicum Beach. The site has tremendous cultural and social value, and this project will help shape the future of the area for many years to come.
This project dates back to 2011 when the Town of Qualicum Beach purchased the property from School District 69 for strategic community development. The Town is now seeking to build on previous public engagement and conceptual design work to engage the public on the future of the subject lands. Through this project, the Town hopes to finalize questions such as the following:
- What types of uses should be incorporated into the valuable public space?
- What types of amenities/services should be incorporated?
- Should there be any concessions, rentals, food service or other commercial uses?
- How much underground parking should be developed in the area? How about surface parking?
- How will the site interact with adjacent uses, including The Old School House, the proposed Naked Naturals grocery store, and adjacent roadways?
The conceptual design for the site will be informed by a parallel mobility study to assess the area and identify potential issues and opportunities related to traffic flow, pedestrian safety, public transit, and parking.
The Town is excited to kick off public engagement activities on Saturday, September 23rd, with a Farmers Market Pop-Up event, that will include interactive information and activities. Additional engagement opportunities include a larger public workshop, distribution of the survey, and a virtual presentation, happening in Fall 2023.
