BATTLE OF SEXES
By Sergy Odiduro
| |
|
Women are on top of their game. At least when it comes to this year's Legacy “40 under 40” honorees. A brief comparative analysis has revealed that amongst the sexes, women are the clear frontrunners amongst the total number of entrepreneurs. This means that In both Legacy Miami and Legacy South Florida editions, women entrepreneurs outnumber their male counterparts by 2 to 1. Keiana Jones, CEO and founder of STEM Kidz and a 2023 “40 under 40” honoree, offered some theories as to why she thinks this is the case.
“There has been more of a push for women to become entrepreneurs and delve into the business space and take ownership and pride to say that, “I'm here. I'm a woman and this is what I can do. I'm not saying in the shadows, I'm equally or even more talented than my colleagues. I am here to shine.” Jones believes that other factors may also play a part.
“There is more visibility because of social media,” she said. “We see moms who aren’t only being mothers, but they are also business owners. We see women in the corporate field who may not have been seen before based on access or location, that are now running million or billion dollar businesses.” In her experience, It is successful women like this that have personally made an impact.
“A lot of women have helped me and pulled me up. There wasn't cattiness,” recalls Jones. “A lot of opportunities that I received in this space are because a woman would let me know about projects or actually hired me into the contracts that I have. So I've received a lot of help from women. Everyone has welcomed me with open arms.” Jones says that this has only encouraged her to give back. Not only does she advise young professionals locally, Jones visits Africa once a year, as well her hometown in Brooklyn, to encourage interest in STEM programs. Her efforts are just one example of how passing the baton through mentorship and education are well known and proven methods of fostering success. Initiatives like Black Business Month are another.
Highlighting entrepreneurships and commerce within the Black community, which ultimately brings both sexes together, is a crucial element to building an economic infrastructure which benefits everyone. On that front, Legacy’s honorees women are leading the pack. And for the fellas? Well, there’s always next year.
