Empowerment: A Do-it-Yourself Process
Empowerment is a do-it-yourself process. That is, by exercising our right to choose and accepting responsibility for the consequences of our choices, we are empowered. Therefore, even empowerment is a choice, meaning we can choose to be empowered...or not.. The JPEAssessment provides information that helps us make Better Choices. For Life.

Better Choices. For Life.

We make very important choices every day. Some relate to how we use our time and talent, how we respond to the circumstances we encounter, whether or not we will go to the gym, etc. The most important of these choices are likely to be how we related to each other. In all cases, we have options from which to choose, the most frequent of which are:

  • Success - We will do whatever it takes to achieve whatever we determine to be success in an encounter or relationship with another. In this case, we will be motivated to modify our behavior to achieve this success because we have detremined that the consequences of our choice will be sufficient to compensate us for our discomfort in "playing a role;" or
  • Comfort - We will "be ourselves" and let the "chips fall where they may." In this case, we will be motivated to do what comes naturally because the consequences of our choice will not be sufficient to compensate us for our discomfort.

The choices we make and the consequences that result will determine our future in these encounters and relationships. The more informed our choices, the better they are likely be, both for us and for others. The Person part of the JPEAssessment produces results that inform our choices about relationships, among other things. That is, when we know our behavioral preferences and those of important others, we are able to use that knowledge to inform the choices we make about how to relate to them and manage our expectations of them. In most cases, we will be motivated to make those choices that are most likely to result in what we believe to be the most favorable consequences.

We can use the Person part the JPEAssessment to help us make Better Choices. For Life.
Part 2: Our Preferences
The second part of the JPEAssessment, the Person Assessment, reveals our behavioral preferences. The results reveal how how we prefer to behave in carrying out our tasks and responsibilities. This part of the JPEAssessment includes three separate and independent sections and produces a three-dimensional view of our work style preferences. These sections are:
  • Personal Style - the way we prefer to behave personally;
  • Career Orientation - the kind of career we prefer to pursue; and
  • Interpersonal Motives - the way we prefer to relate to others.
The results from these sections are integrated and analyzed to reveal preferences in the same dimensions as the results from the Job Assessment described in the preceding edition. This allows for a one-to-one comparison between Job perceptions and Personal preferences, thereby producing a measure of "fit" between us and our job.

This part of the JPEAssessment can be used separately or in various combinations with other parts. When only the Person Assessment is used, we are able to make Better Choices in several areas:
  • Partnerships/Team-Building - when two or more of us need or want to have more effective relationships, we can compare our preferences and determine how similarities and differences are likely to affect the opportunities and challenges we face in relating to each other;
  • Conflict Resolution - when we get into conflict with each other, we sometimes have trouble identifying the cause. By comparing our individual preferences, we can identify areas of behavior where we are likely to have opportunities for and challenges to our relationship;
  • Organization Culture - when it is important to know the "culture" of the organization's employees and to what extent that culture might be affecting our relationships with our jobs' demands and our organization's success.

The Person Assessment results are presented in a common, non-judgmental (i.e., good or bad, right or wrong) language that facilitates conversation about preferred work styles. We often make assumptions about others on the basis of what we observe in their behavior. We often assume motives behind those behaviors and are often wrong. We are less likely to make these inaccurate assumptions when we know their preferred work styles and can make informed choices about how we relate to them and what we can reasonably expect from them. This will be true as long as they are "being themselves" (rather then playing a role) when we encounter them.
