January 2023

This New Year was 30 years in the making!

By Paul Barboza, CEO

A happy new year to you all! I hope you celebrated the start of 2023 safely and in good spirits with family and friends. It is always exciting to start off a new year and think about all the possibilities that are ahead: it’s a chance for a fresh start to a brand-new year. In Waterborne’s case, 2023 is a monumental year.

This year marks an important anniversary for Waterborne as we will celebrate our 30th year in business. It was a momentous

day in May 1993 when Marty Williams and Patrick Holden (retired) founded our firm and began our long history of successfully supporting our client’s environmental and water resource requirements. Over the decades, we’ve expanded our reach to include a broad spectrum that ranges from regulatory to stewardship issues. That expansion wasn’t limited to services. From our beginnings within crop protection and agriculture, we’ve globally become trusted experts within the veterinary medicines, home and personal care, industrial chemical, pharmaceutical, health, and federal markets. It’s impressive to see how far we’ve come in 30 years.

This year we’re looking forward to serving our clients as they achieve their own milestones. There are many exciting changes coming down the pike, such as new compounds that have completed the research and development process and are ready to move to field testing. Our team is poised to help our clients support their discoveries, fulfill their project requirements, and enjoy their own business growth.

Business growth can mean different things to different people, but I’ve found that opportunities abound when one has as impressive a team as ours. 2023 will see us expanding our services as our team grows. While some faces will be new, we’re delighted that familiar friends are rejoining our team. In that vein, please join me in welcoming Travis Thompson back to our Waterborne family. Beginning this week, Travis will provide additional depth within our team of TFD Study Directors while also interacting with clients as part of our business development team.

I took over the reins as Waterborne’s CEO in 2021, and in my time at the helm, I’ve been in awe of our team and how each member continues to demonstrate that our organizational strength is found not only within the depth of our expertise but in the way we collaborate and pool our strengths. Our talented team works hard to achieve goals for ourselves and our clients. I’ve learned that Waterborne provides opportunities for all who are motivated!

I look forward to the exciting journey that will be Waterborne’s 30th anniversary and extend my gratitude and availability as we work with you to accomplish your business goals! Learn more about Paul Barboza, CEO.

EPA Releases New PFAS Analytic Tools

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a new interactive webpage, called the “PFAS Analytic Tools,” which provides information about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) across the country. This information will help the public, researchers, and other stakeholders better understand potential PFAS sources in their communities. The PFAS Analytic Tools bring together multiple sources of information in one spot with mapping, charting, and filtering functions, allowing the public to see where testing has been done and what level of detections were measured.

EPA’s PFAS Analytic Tools draws from multiple national databases and reports to consolidate information in one webpage. The PFAS Analytic Tools includes information on Clean Water Act PFAS discharges from permitted sources, reported spills containing PFAS constituents, facilities historically manufacturing or importing PFAS, federally owned locations where PFAS is being investigated, transfers of PFAS-containing waste, PFAS detection in natural resources such as fish or surface water, and drinking water testing results. From Droughts to Floods: California’s Wacky Weather

In our September newsletter, we visited the Southwest of the United States and saw the dire need for reductions in water usage due to the region being in a severe drought. Three months later, California is being inundated with rainfall. A narrow corridor of concentrated moisture, also known as an atmospheric river, has been the culprit to the region’s flooding. Both the drought and the flooding are major causes of concern for the California farmers. Read more about this weather pattern and how climate change is influencing the intensity of these atmospheric rivers here.

Animal Testing on the Outs?

In 2020, EPA’s New Approach Methods, also known as NAMs, was released with the incentive to reduce the use of vertebrate animal testing (US EPA NAMs). Based on new legislation, the US FDA will no longer need to require animal testing before human drug trials. Alternative methods for research and development are becoming more and more favorable not only to reduce animal testing but in cost-effectiveness as well. Check out the article here.
