Revised Canada Food Guide
Are you aware of the newly revised Canada Food Guide?

Physical health is very closely tied with mental health. This new food guide shows not only food choices and portions, it also highlights the benefits of making meals a social activity and the importance of mindfulness when eating.

Eating healthy foods can also provide more energy and nutrition to support an active lifestyle that can help to keep us engaged in life and improve overall mood and sleep.
FCSSGW is here for you!

Wednesdays 1:00-7:00 pm

All are welcome to attend our walk-in counselling service. People using this service can expect to leave with a support plan and direction for next steps in their recovery journey.

Thanks to funding from the United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin, walk-in counselling is offered at a sliding scale fee to make it affordable to everyone.

Childhood Sexual Abuse
Are you a survivor of Childhood Sexual Abuse or do you know someone who is? If you are, or do, you are not alone!

You have probably noticed that sexual abuse is in the news a lot recently. Actually, it’s hard to turn on the news without hearing about women coming out and revealing what has been quietly going on behind closed doors. Those of us who have not been personally impacted now suddenly know someone who has. Sexual abuse has affected everyone, with those individuals who are marginalized and have limited access to resources most of all.

FCSSGW wants to let you know we have programs for individuals who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. There is no fee to attend. We offer individual counselling sessions with trauma informed therapists at our offices in Guelph, Fergus and Mount Forest.

For more information or to book an appointment, please call Intake at 519-824-2431, ext. 10.

Special Projects
Rural Connections: A Train the Trainer Approach to Assisting Residents of Wellington County Experiencing Gender-Based Violence
FCSSGW will work in partnership with other organizations that deliver services in rural communities of Wellington County to produce a train-the-trainer webinar for service providers in health, social service and other sectors.

The purpose of this tool is to equip all service providers to effectively identify, work with and/or refer individuals experiencing violence and abuse using interventions tailored to the realities of living in a rural context. Training will also include suggested resources such as validated screening tools and safety plans. Trained service providers will be expected to take the information back to their organizations and the webinar will be available for ongoing use.
Shoebox Campaign
FCSSGW once again partnered with the Shoebox Project Guelph to provide shoebox gifts to women. This year, over 120 women have received shoeboxes. These shoeboxes significantly impact the lives of the women to whom they are offered; FCSSGW received a lot of positive feedback this year.

Here is one example of the campaign's positive effect:
First, she admired the stitching on the hat – she is a knitter, so was assessing the hat with
an eye that knows what to look for. She said it was very well made, and she loved the colour.
(It also looked very cute on her). Then she opened the box.

She pulled out each item and exclaimed over it – “Lemon tea! I love lemon tea, and I don’t have
any right now! A gift certificate for Tim Horton’s! Another for Walmart! These socks are perfect!”
There was a small figurine of an elephant – she said she loves elephants and elephants
are for good luck. She said that she was getting shivers opening the box, wondering how
someone could have gotten so many things that fit so well for her.

She left delighted, and this was after a session in which she told me all the things that
were not going well in her life right now.
