Announcing the Deaths of

Manert Kennedy and Terry Hufford

NABT is saddened to announce the deaths of two longtime members of our community. Dr. Manert Kennedy passed away peacefully on March 18, 2024, in Oakland, California. Manert grew up in Michigan and, after high school, served in the United States Marine Corps. His time in uniform included combat duty during the Korean War.

After his military service, Manert attended Butler University and Ohio State University, receiving an MS and an Honorary PhD in Education. He taught science and coached football in secondary schools in the Detroit area for ten years before moving to Boulder, Colorado, in 1965 to help launch the Biological Science Curriculum Study (BSCS, now BSCS Science Learning). While at BSCS he served as the Associate Director and then as the Vice President. It was during that time he was elected as NABT President, serving in that role in 1979.

Manert championed education, formed several programs and centers, served as a visiting professor, and received numerous awards, including the NABT Honorary Membership in 1983 and the Second Annual McKee Award in 1988, the highest honor awarded by The White House for leadership in public/private partnership development.

Even in retirement, Manert was called to serve. He was on the Advisory Board of Directors for the Colorado State Veterans Living Center, and was a life member of the 1st Marine Division Association, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, and The Disabled American Veterans

Manert is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and remembered fondly by countless friends, colleagues, and students. His full obituary is at Manert Kennedy

Dr. Terry Hufford died on March 20, 2024. He was an emeritus professor of botany at George Washington University and also a member of GW’s Academy of Distinguished Teachers, an honor befitting this award-winning educator. Terry was an innovator and was known nationally for his work in STEM teaching and learning, and curriculum design. He taught his first online course in 2013.

Terry was a thought leader in the NABT Four-Year College & University Section and served as the Section Chair in 1991. In 2006, NABT bestowed Terry with the Honorary Membership, the association’s highest award.

After “retirement,” Terry continued to write scholarly manuscripts on science learning and taught courses like his “Biology in the City.” Funded by the Hewlett Foundation, this student-centered course allowed students the opportunity to work through big ideas in biology problems while exploring resources in the Washington, DC, area.

Terry epitomized what it meant to be a leader in life science education and was a beloved mentor and friend to many in the NABT Community.
