DYS Newsletter - Spring 2024

Message from the Director

Dear Friends-

I am pleased to invite you to our Annual Butterfly Breakfast where we will be celebrating 55 years of offering programs and services to thousands of youth and families in greater Danbury. We will be honoring Officer Mitchell Heller of the Brookfield Police Department for his dedication and extra effort he puts in for our JRB clients and Dotsy Torres, the Director of Education at Jericho Partnership, for her continued support and for hosting our Summer Youth Employment participants for 10 years.

While counseling and after-school programs often come to mind when people think of Danbury Youth Services, I wanted to highlight one of our most impactful programs, the Juvenile Review Board. Before I was fortunate to become the Executive Director, I was involved in the early stages of bringing this critical intervention to Danbury and served as the JRB Case Manager and Program Coordinator for 7 years. The JRB is a program that is very close to my heart and throughout the years, I have seen the change it makes in our clients' lives. It is very important for youth to get the second chance that they deserve, learn from their mistakes, and learn the importance of giving back to the community.

I'm happy to announce the extension of our after-school programs and that we now offer services on Fridays. The dedicated staff at the DYS continues to work with youth in Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, Redding & Ridgefield.

Thank you to everyone for the support that you have shown me and DYS for the past year, this work would not be possible without the collaborations we have with our community members.

Sincerely,

Tammy

DYS Expands After-School Programs

DYS is trying something new with our youth development programs for middle schoolers. Both Earn-A-Bike and GALs meet twice a week so to offer more face-to-face instruction time to all participants, our program coordinator is hosting combined sessions on Fridays. The students from both programs have gotten acquainted and enjoy working on a variety of activities together.

We are accepting applications for the

2024 Summer Youth Employment Program

DYS is excited to launch the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) linking youth 14 - 24 years old to local employers, offering young people connections to professional networks and valuable paid work experience.  DYS has managed SYEP in Danbury for over 10 years and looks forward to welcoming up to 63 youth back this summer. Participants will work 20 hours a week for 6 weeks, earning minimum wage while exploring career interests and developing workplace skills.  To enhance the SYEP experience and provide life skills coaching, DYS hosts workshops each Friday focusing on financial literacy, prevention education, resume writing, interview skills, healthy relationships and internet safety.

DYS is thankful to the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board for funding SYEP and supporting young people in our community.  Applications are due May 29th and space is limited so don’t delay - apply today!

TARGET Youth Staying Active

A key element of the healthy lifestyle curriculum taught in the Teaching And Reaching Gaining Excellence Together (TARGET) program is physical activity. Participants learn the importance of exercise while regularly spending time outside or in the gym playing and staying active. Regular exercise is essential for good physical and mental health and wellbeing – it helps build strong bones and muscles, reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, increases self-esteem and confidence, controls weight and improves concentration.

Spotlight on the Juvenile Review Board

One of the largest programs offered by DYS is the Juvenile Review Board (JRB), which serves nearly 85 youth and families each year. The JRB offers meaningful alternatives to the criminal justice system through community-based intervention strategies. The board is comprised of professionals involved in caring for youth, with representation from DYS, local police departments, the juvenile court system, schools, social workers and members of the community.

Youth under the age of 18 who have committed a misdemeanor offense are referred to the JRB case manager. The JRB designs and offers alternatives that are aimed at promoting responsible behavior by offenders and solving problems that may be at the root of delinquent behavior. Interventions include counseling, tutoring, extracurricular activities, substance abuse prevention, volunteering as well as regular check-ins, all managed by the DYS case manager. If the youth and family comply with the diversion alternative, they will not have to appear in court and the youth will not have a juvenile record regarding the offense.

The parent of a JRB client shared the following testimonial describing their success with the program:

I would like to express our gratitude as a family to DYS because, through your JRB program, my son was able to make positive changes in his life. You offered us a guide that amid our daily routine, parents cannot see. You showed us the way forward when we felt that these types of problems have no solution.  Our whole family was feeling overwhelmed, unsure of how to respond and help our children. You made the problem that my son was involved in become a point of opportunity for improvement, not only for him, but your help and support reached our entire family.

With the first interview, the JRB was able to understand what was needed and gave us guidelines on how to handle the situation, which was very helpful to me as a mother. The case manager helped us locate activities and tutoring, provided important financial support, and was always willing to help and prompt to respond to our concerns.

The most important thing I see and appreciate about the JRB is the follow-up they do in each case, by checking in and asking how it is going. They don’t pressure the youth but offer to help and bring about encouraging change for our boys.

After months of working with DYS, my son has made helpful modifications.  He enjoys his extracurricular activity, he takes advantage of the tutoring provided so his grades are improving and he is working on controlling his emotions with his therapist.  We are grateful to DYS for helping him make these positive changes.

Girls As Leaders

In celebration of Women's History Month, our GALs participants selected a woman they admire, either from history or in their personal lives, and shared why she is a role model for them. The DYS GALs program provides a safe, comfortable environment for young women to develop positive leadership skills, strengthen social skills, and practice more effective communication to improve their self-confidence and promote academic success.

Earn-A-Bike

The spring cohort of Earn-A-Bike welcomed new middle school students interested in refurbishing a bicycle for themselves while developing social skills, learning teamwork and building confidence. Participants also learn the technical skills needed to repair the bikes and safety protocols necessary to ride on the road.

DYS is actively seeking job sites to host participants in the

 2024 Summer Youth Employment Program.

Do you want the opportunity to shape the future workforce while employing and educating tomorrow's leaders?  DYS is looking for employers to host youth seeking first-time job experience. Small businesses, non-profits, city departments or anyone who could use some extra help this summer make great job sites. You train, WE PAY! Youth will work 20 hours a week for 6 weeks, July 8 – August 16.  Most of our SYEP employers look forward to hosting every summer and some retain the youth throughout the school year.

Reading is Fun!

Participants in the Teaching And Reaching Gaining Excellence Together (TARGET) program enjoy sharpening their reading skills and spending time with each other after school. Reading together helps youth develop critical thinking and literacy skills while fostering social connections. Last year, 65% of TARGET students grew at least two grade levels!

Act of Kindness

Danbury resident, Jill Lord, built a magnificent, fully furnished dollhouse by hand to donate to DYS! Her craftsmanship and attention to detail are amazing.  It is a perfect addition to our playroom and many, many children will enjoy it for years to come. Thank you Jill!

Pedals for Progress

Thank you to the Brookfield Police Department and students from Brookfield High School for launching Pedals for Progress. They are collecting donations of new or used bicycles for the DYS Earn-A-Bike program. We are grateful for our partnership and their continued support of our programs.
