Producers' Notes

Be brave. Put down the music and memorize!

First, for those of you who may have missed rehearsal, please welcome Beverly Roche, who has generously agreed to step in as co-producer since Cassandra had to step away for personal reasons. We wish Cassandra all the best and send our love. And there’s no one better to pick up the co-producing job, in addition to all the other hats she wears for the Mystic than Bev!

I was very moved by something Mike said at rehearsal that I think gives each of us another reason to sing: “We’re not at the beginning and we’re not at the end. But we do bring things that are going on in our lives to rehearsal and sometimes focusing on the music can help." Thank you, Mike, for that.

Mike also focused on memorizing the music. It’s not always easy but we can do it. As we focus the next four weeks on memorization, here’s a little encouragement. Studies show that singing can improve mental alertness, memory and concentration as it involves focusing on multiple things at once, engaging many areas of the brain.

And on top of that, singing with other people, can help build connections and feelings of togetherness.

So, as Mike said at rehearsal — “Be brave! Put down the music and memorize!”

Mike's Notes

Great work everyone!

We've got four more weeks of rehearsals to fully bake our show, and I am so excited for the direction we're moving. We should now be getting to the phase where we're starting to work on memorization, and making the brave choice to put down our music and see where things stand each week. Don't be afraid...this is how we'll make good progress!

This week, it would be extremely helpful if everyone in the group could, at the very least, have a listen to these six songs and, ideally, take a minute with your practice resources to feel most comfortable before Tuesday night. If you know the notes, you can spend your time in rehearsal practicing ensemble building and memorization, which will aid you greatly!

Songs for rehearsal

  • Turn, Turn, Turn
  • Turn Around
  • You've Got a Friend
  • Winter Song
  • Circle Game
  • Ashokan Farewell

Thanks for all your hard work. Keep it up, and we'll be in great shape!

~ Mike

Doors in and Doors out

Joe Cook, my counterpart at First Parish, let me know on Wednesday that the door in the Vestry that leads out to the garden was propped open. It's possible it it happened either the night before during rehearsal or very early Wednesday morning so he is alerting church staff and I am alerting singers.

Please access the garden using the door at the back of the church, accessible through the Sanctuary and use the Vestry door only in an emergency.

~ Michèle

Volunteers Get a Free Ticket!

On Sunday, look for a Call for Volunteers email in your inbox which will list the available volunteer positions for the concert. In the meantime, if you, a family member or friend would like to raise a hand early, send an email to and let Michèle know which role you would like to fill on May 21 before sitting back to enjoy the concert for free!

We need EACH of you to be a Mystic Ambassador and help us spread the word about our concert!

You can…

  • Post our concert flyers on bulletin boards at your gym, library, coffee shop, wherever you can. If the large version won’t fit, post the mini-flyer instead.

For Virtual Singers

Livestream Instructions & Tips

Welcome Virtual Singers!!

We are so glad you are joining us, and look forward to having you there "with us" in the rehearsal hall!

What you will need:

  • A computer/laptop (recommended) We recommend your computer or laptop - the bigger the screen, and the better your speakers, the more you will feel "with" us. But a tablet, ipad or phone will work, too.

  • Headphones, Earbuds or External Speakers (highly recommended). The better your speakers, the more you will hear the director and singers in the room.

  • A place to sit and sing comfortably. We suggest an upright chair, similar to what you would find at rehearsal. A soft chair or couch is not as conducive to good singing.

How to tune into the Livestream:

At 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, click the video preview or link below, and you'll be with us! Each week, we'll post the livestream link here in News & Notes, and on the website, here

Occasionally, we lose the livestream signal due to a poor internet connection. If that happens, go to the "Just in case" backup link below. We'll try to be back up and running asap!

How to watch the video after the rehearsal:
