Jonathan's Notes

Hello Mystic Friends,

Thanks so much for another productive rehearsal. We’re getting there!

In our remaining rehearsals we’ll focus on trying to get through complete tunes. We’ll focus on any “trouble spots” and then try to run the tunes completely through. Please consider trying to sing “off book” in our rehearsals, it’s the best way to lock in the words and its much more fun to look at me instead of your lyric sheets!

Thanks to those who tried out for solos this week. We will have tryouts after next rehearsal, so it’s not too late to try out!

Keep listening to the rehearsal recordings and the original recordings of our songs.

…and thanks for your love and support, it’s been fun getting back in the MC “saddle”! I’m looking forward to a great concert experience!

Introducing our guest vocalist, Nichelle Mungo

We’re fortunate to have a special guest vocalist this season.

Berklee Professor Nichelle Mungo gave us a wonderful vocal clinic during our pandemic sessions and will be back again to perform live with us in Cary! She will be singing along with us and also performing some solo selections as well.  She’s active online so feel free to connect with her at

From the Producers...

Hi Mystic Singers:

Well, it's February -- 3 weeks out from the concert.  Believe it or not, I think we're in good shape.

This Tuesday's rehearsal reminded me a few things to include here.

Taking care of your voice:

  • Warm up before rehearsal. This will keep your voice healthier, avoid injury to your vocal cords, and make you sound and feel better!  (We don't always have time for a long warm up before we start singing so you doing one in advance takes care of you.) As Jonathan mentioned, you can do something as simple as humming up and down scales, and try to hum to the top of your range and then to the bottom. You can also sing scales, also up to the top and down to the bottom, gently. If you spend even 5 (or preferably 10) minutes, doing this, you'll be taking much better care of your voice. This is especially important before the Tech rehearsal and concert.
  • Stay hydrated, and:
  • Avoid eating dairy, chocolate or anything with caffeine, before you sing. This will help you keep your throats with less phlegm.

Remember to use your resources:

  • If possible, it is super helpful to listen to your recordings of the previous week(s)' rehearsal before each reherarsal, to remind yourself of your part... That way, when Jonathan points to your section and prompts you/us to sing what he taught you two weeks ago, you can remember.... (He's very forgiving, but I was one of the ones that forgot my part.... felt kind of silly.)  Also, listen to the youtube videos that Jonathan provided, so you can internalize how your part fits in with the entire piece.

  • Please make sure you let us know if you will be needing a chair for the concert so we have enough. Once seated, you will sit for the entire concert.
  • Spread the word by Email, Facebook, Flyers.  Let's fill Cary Hall!

OK, stay warm and keep singing.   See you next Tuesday. With Love,

Online Auction

OK Mystic Gospel Singers! Here's your chance to represent the Gospel season in our annual online auction!

Over the past four years, it's been primarily Spring Season singers who have propelled our online auction into our big annual fundraiser. Now's YOUR turn!!

What's the auction?

Our online auction features dozens of items donated by Mystic singers to raise needed funds for the Chorale. Past auctions have raised $6000-10,000 for Mystic! This helps us keep singer fees low and put on our fabulous concerts!

What kinds of items are we looking for?

Items made by Mystic singers have been a bit hit, as well as other items, including:

  • Baked goods: Cookies, Cakes & Pies
  • One-pot meals: Your famous lasagna or specialty soup
  • Your own art & fine crafts
  • Gift Certificates to your favorite local shops & restaurants
  • Gift Certificates for professional services, such as massage, personal coaching, gardening, etc.
  • Jewelry, Scarves & Accessories
  • Items for the kitchen & dining room
  • Outings & Experiences, such as a guided hike, group class or museum outing, led by you!

How to donate to the auction:

Please fill out our auction donation form, here: Mystic Chorale Auction Donation Form

What's the deadline? The auction will be in the Spring, but we'd like to collect donations from Gopsel singers before the end of the season.

Livestream Instructions & Tips

Welcome Virtual Singers!!

We are so glad you are joining us, and look forward to having you there "with us" in the rehearsal hall!

What you will need:

  • A computer/laptop (recommended) We recommend your computer or laptop - the bigger the screen, and the better your speakers, the more you will feel "with" us. But a tablet, ipad or phone will work, too.

  • Headphones, Earbuds or External Speakers (highly recommended). The better your speakers, the more you will hear the director and singers in the room.

  • A place to sit and sing comfortably. We suggest an upright chair, similar to what you would find at rehearsal. A soft chair or couch is not as conducive to good singing.

How to tune into the Livestream:

At 7:30 on Tuesday, click the video preview or link below, and you'll be with us! Each week, we'll post the livestream link here in News & Notes, and on the website, here

If we lose the Livestream signal:

Occasionally, we lose the livestream signal due to a poor internet connection. If that happens, go to the "Just in case" backup link below. We'll try to be back up and running asap!

How to watch the video after the rehearsal:

If you miss the Livestream on Tuesday night, it will be available on our website and a YouTube Playlist   after rehearsal.
