Summer Adventures

The
Children of the Family Shelter, Mom's Place and Bernauer Manor have busy this summer. Each week, thanks to volunteers Melanie Hopp and Lynn Booth, the group has had some exciting activities. Their first experience involved the MotorCity Horsemen. Horses carried young and old alike in the lot between the Scott Building and Mom's Place. The children also pet and fed the horses.

That wasn't their only experience with animals this summer! For more animal love, the kids rode the Cass school bus to Ann Arbor and visited the Dominos Petting Farms. In addition to seeing the animals, they also decorated (and munched on) some homemade cookies.

For those who prefer art to animals, the children went to see a live performance at PuppetArt in Detroit. If puppet theater didn't make them giggle, Ice Age: Continental Drift provided some comic relief for all ages the following week. After the movie, group members got to show off their golf skills at Putterz miniature golf course in Ypsilanti. For some time on the water, the kids went down to the diamond Jack River Tour on the Detroit River.

These experiences have provided joy, laughter, amusement, and fun throughout the summer. If you would like to help volunteer  or donate an activity for our children, just let us know!

Former Detroit Piston Rick Mahorn visited CCSS before serving as the Celebrity Chair of the Cass Fireworks event. Here he is pictured with Kane Morris in front of the Scott Building. The Ford Motor Compnay Fund was the presenting sponsor of this year's event that raised $135,000 for Cass
Interns to the Rescue
This summer, CCSS not only welcomed volunteer teams from across the country but the agency has had two summer interns from other states: Cora Glass and Taylor Mertins.  Cora, a rising senior at High Point University in North Carolina, is studying nonprofit leadership and management and Taylor is entering his third year as a Masters of Divinity student at Duke Divinity School.  Both Taylor and Cora are on the path towards ordained ministry.  This summer they have worked in many capacities at Cass. They assisted in the organization and set-up of the Catch the Fireworks fundraiser, researched poverty, helped in Cass' green industries, led volunteer groups, and enjoyed teaching homeless kids to swim at Rev. Fowler's pool.   Time at Cass has provided for many learning experiences in urban ministry and service.
