Waterworks: A Wave of Innovation

In January 2020, Newport News Waterworks (NNWW) initiated a significant upgrade to modernize its meter reading methods by implementing a state-of-the-art automated system. The new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters have transformed water meter readings throughout the NNWW service area, enhancing customer service and providing cost-effective solutions. This upgrade has increased efficiency, reduced labor and vehicle costs, minimized the carbon footprint, and offered more accurate and timely billing.

In March 2021, NNWW approved the mass deployment of AMI meters and communication devices. On May 15, 2024, employees celebrated the installation of all 131,731 new smart meters, marking the successful conclusion of this four-year endeavor.
