Republic of Palau’s Forest Resources: Forest Inventory and Analysis, 2014

In 2014, the USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis program collected forest and tree measurements from 56 forest plots among three forest communities (lowland forest, mangrove, and strand forest) in the Republic of Palau, across Babeldaob, Koror, Peleliu, Angaur, and the Rock Islands. A total of 125 tree species and 196 dominant vascular plants were recorded, most in lowland tropical rainforest.

Alaska’s Timber Harvest and Forest Products Industry, 2019

This report traces the flow of timber harvested in Alaska during calendar year 2019, describes the composition and operations of the state’s primary forest products industry, and quantifies volumes and uses of wood fiber. The authors discuss historical wood products industry changes, as well as trends in timber harvest, production, log exports, sales of primary wood products, employment, and emerging issues for Alaska’s forest industry.

From Timber to Tourism: Perceptions in Rural Communities about Changing Forest-Based Economies

Jeff Kline, a research forester and economist with the Pacific Northwest Research Station, and Ian Munanura, a tourism expert and associate professor at Oregon State University, surveyed residents in Klamath and Linn Counties—two areas once heavily reliant on the wood products industry. They wanted to learn about residents’ attitudes toward tourism, and whether residents would support forest-based outdoor recreation opportunities in their communities.

Time Tells the Story: Concerns for Long-Term Species Resilience with Habitat Change

Dede Olson, a scientist with the Pacific Northwest Research Station, has studied the intersection of salamanders and forest management practices for more than 30 years. She recently conducted studies of how the management of riparian buffer zones affects salamander populations and the food webs that sustain them. Coastal giant salamanders can live for more than 25 years. Factoring in their longevity when managing their habitat is key to their survival.

Beyond the Battlefield: Public Lands as Healing Spaces for Military Veterans

A growing body of evidence shows that nature-based therapy can help reduce stress and trauma symptoms. To shed light on the role that public land management plays in providing outdoor experiences for veterans, Lee Cerveny and Monika Derrien, scientists with the Pacific Northwest Research Station, and colleagues interviewed public land managers, outdoor program providers, program participants, researchers, and health professionals.

They found that strategic partnerships may enable public land agencies to expand benefits to veterans and spur broader societal benefits. This research can inform the development of nature-based programming in nations affected by war, displacement, and other loss.
