Get to Know Us: Linda Rojas |
|
My name is Linda Rojas and I was born in Cuba in 1998 to a loving family that has supported me in this trip called life. When I was 9 years old, my parents had to leave the island, moving across the ocean to Spain, where I grew up. After some years, my parents decided that it was time to come to Miami, to be closer to our little island and to come back to our Cuban community. So we flew and drove and walked until Miami was under our feet and the voices of Cuban exiles all around us. Right then and there I knew Miami was the place for me. I graduated high school summa cum laude and moved back to Spain to study Comparative Law. This past July, I obtained my Bachelor of Comparative Law Degree from IE University. |

Shaped by these experiences and eager to learn, I joined Del Amo Law in January of 2021. At Del Amo Law, each month has been a new experience, a new lesson and a new memory. I started in January, answering phone calls and a little scared of whether I would understand what people were saying over the phone. Being a secretary at Del Amo Law provided me key tools that I will be using for the rest of my life. The different areas of specialization at Del Amo Law and the staff’s willingness to teach has allowed me to learn about Personal Injury Protection, Family Law, Real Estate, Business Law and Personal Injury. After 7 months at the office, I have been given the opportunity to work as the legal assistant for the Litigation Department, where I am able to help people while doing something different every day to meet and excel the high standards that guide this office.
There you had a little part of my life. I am just a Cuban girl in love with Miami, who travels the world, enjoys learning and is working to become a lawyer.

US INDEPENDENCE
The 4th of July the United States dressed white, red and blue to celebrate a key moment for the history of this country. On July 2, 1776 the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, which led to the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4. This day has been celebrated with fireworks, parades and festivities ever since.
Founding father and second President, John Adams envisioned what has come to pass to present: “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival…It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shews, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward forever more.”
Thus, this country lights up the sky from North to South and East to West in the color of a flag that represents freedom, equality and liberty for all.

They are suffering and need our prayers and support.
Closer to US territory than Miami is to Naples, Cuba is bleeding.
The present is intertwined with the future that is being shaped this month in the streets of the island. Cubans, who have been oppressed, tortured and killed for over 60 years, are taking to the streets to fight for their rights. Barely fed, with no weapons, and fighting against an army trained to kill, Cubans are outside and screaming. They are trying with everything they have to defend themselves, to overcome the power of a regime that is suffocating them to death in the worst way possible.
The Cuban flag is stained with the blood of those begging for help. The hands of those in power are stained with blood that has been shed in the streets. Meanwhile, the Cuban media maintains its story line, unwilling to accept that they are not wanted. Now, they are, again, silencing the people: no internet, no medical assistance, no voice and no food. However, the government is giving many other things completely for free: death, injuries, threats, pain and torture. The communist dictatorship is stuck in Patria o Muerte (fatherland or death) while the people are crying for Patria y Vida (fatherland and life).
Ninety miles from the island, Cubans in exile are screaming alongside their brothers and sisters on the island, trying to amplify their voices. However, statements are not enough today. Not when unarmed civilians on the island are oppressed by military equipment.
This July, a small country with a lot of hope and dreams, connected with the US through Miami, is fighting for its freedom and it needs help.
