DYK-- Charles the Gorilla, a long time resident of the Toronto Zoo is 52nd years old? For fifty years, Charles has provided our community with fond memories, while teaching us about the endangered status of Western Lowland Gorillas.
The Western Lowland Gorilla is endangered largely due to impacts on its natural habitat. The mining of coltan ore, to be used in the manufacturing of cell phones and electronic devices, is a significant threat to the rainforests of the former Republic of the Congo.
As a result, the Toronto Zoo is now accepting used cell phones, to promote reuse of the tantalum that is produced from coltan ore and minimize future mining efforts.
Phones can be dropped off in person at the Zoo or the Scarborough Civic Centre, or can be mailed to:
