There will be no book club meeting in May!!
Our next book club meeting will be June 15th from 4-5pm.
We will be limiting attendance to 25 people, however we will keep a list of interested alternates in case one of the first 25 to sign up can't make it. Because of the 25 person limit we ask that if you sign up and are unable to attend that you please call and let us know so that your spot won't go to waste.
If you want to sign up to attend, please give us a call at the store 530-272-2131 or sign up in person. Those are the only two ways to get on the list, not via email or social media, so we look forward to hearing from you soon!

East Asian
by Charles Yu
Willis Wu doesn’t perceive himself as the protagonist in his own life: he’s merely Generic Asian Man. Sometimes he gets to be Background Oriental Making a Weird Face or even Disgraced Son, but always he is relegated to a prop. Yet every day, he leaves his tiny room in a Chinatown SRO and enters the Golden Palace restaurant, where Black and White, a procedural cop show, is in perpetual production. He’s a bit player here, too, but he dreams of being Kung Fu Guy—the most respected role that anyone who looks like him can attain. Or is it?

Southeast Asian
by Viet Thanh Nguyen
The winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, as well as seven other awards, The Sympathizer is the breakthrough novel of the year. With the pace and suspense of a thriller and prose that has been compared to Graham Greene and Saul Bellow, The Sympathizer is a sweeping epic of love and betrayal. The narrator, a communist double agent, is a "man of two minds," a half-French, half-Vietnamese army captain who arranges to come to America after the Fall of Saigon, and while building a new life with other Vietnamese refugees in Los Angeles is secretly reporting back to his communist superiors in Vietnam.

South Asian
By Vaishnavi Patel
I was born on the full moon under an auspicious constellation, the holiest of positions—much good it did me.
So begins Kaikeyi’s story. The only daughter of the kingdom of Kekaya, she is raised on legends of the gods: how they churned the vast ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, how they vanquish evil and ensure the land of Bharat prospers, and how they offer powerful boons to the devout and the wise. Yet she watches as her father unceremoniously banishes her mother, listens as her own worth is reduced to how great a marriage alliance she can secure. And when she calls upon the gods for help, they never seem to hear.

Pacific Islander
By JK Jackson
The beautiful myths of the ancient Polynesians are brought together in this new collection: from Hawaii the Rainbow Maiden of Manoa undulates through the valleys and rainbow mists; the creator Maui releases his fish hooks into the sea to raise the islands to the surface; and tales of Pele the Fire Goddess, who hurls fountains of molten rock into the air creating vast flows of lava. From the Maori of New Zealand come the strange fruit of darkness, the tales of Tiki and the Great Mother from whom the gods descend, then humankind. And from Polynesia, more legends of Maui creating the ancestors, and Hina the moon goddess. Such myth-making joy creates a rare unity in diversity as the ancient Polynesians strove to explain the beauty and darkness of their lush ocean worlds, now offered in this new selection of myths and legends

Welcome to Kids’ Corner where we highlight some of our favorite kids books coming out this month!

"Ellie Engle is the hero we all need and this book should be on middle-grade shelves everywhere. She goes from wallflower to having the power over life and death in a split second and while the experience changes her, she always stays kind and compassionate. Her only difficulty is extending those traits to herself, learning that her dreams and desires matter too, even if they are different from other kids. Johnson delivers nothing but wisdom through the adventures of her young protagonist, from the clearer truisms like it’s better to be weird than mean and that you should never shrink yourself to make those around you feel big, to the knottier and more complicated aspects of friendship. Friends may grow apart or make mistakes, mistakes that hurt and take time to heal, but what matters is if they are willing to learn and do better the next time. Friendships can grow and change, just like people do, and Abby and Ellie show that’s okay. You just need to be you."

"Ortega and her Witchlings are back for a phenomenal sequel that captures the same wonder and joy of the first while continuing to build out an exceptional, expansive world. This book follows the Spare coven through fresh mystery and intrigue as an unknown force threatens Thorn and other competitors in the Golden Frog Games with archaic magic. On top of that, Seven has a dangerous secret she has been keeping from everyone which may destroy her coven and her future. Ortega has created an entertaining, compelling story about magic and adventure that just so happens to also deal with the everyday issues that come with growing up. It’s an amazing series and hopefully there are many more adventures to come for the fabulous Witchlings."

"Gen is the pragmatic, relatable princess-detective we need. Her rules for sleuthing are also rather good rules for living and serve as a useful guide when she is taken from the obscurity of the New York foster system and thrust into the blinding spotlight of being the long-lost heir to the throne of a small European country. With a quick mind and empathetic heart, Gen sets about learning the ropes only to discover a nefarious plot to prevent her coronation. Fortunately, being a princess doesn’t prevent you from being an incredible detective so she sets about to deduce who the villain is. A heart-warming blend of Nancy Drew and THE PRINCESS DIARIES, this is a story of self-discovery, self-belief, and the creation of a family based on understanding and compromise."
