Far from Atlantis

by Raymond Luczak

Raymond Luczak's "Far from Atlantis" intertwines poetic tales of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and mythical Atlantis. The poems, rooted in nature and water, symbolize escape from an ableist society. Luczak, reflecting on his deaf childhood within a hearing family, aligns with marginalized mythical beings. The collection blends autoethnography with speculation, bringing together historical figures and 1970s pop icons like the Six Million Dollar Man and Wonder Woman, illustrating his unique, marginal existence.

The Butterfly Cage

by Rachel Zemach

Rachel Zemach's book explores the struggles of Deaf individuals in a hearing school, highlighting internalized oppression and classroom challenges. It follows her and young Laszlo's experiences, leading to significant advocacy in the Deaf community. The narrative combines personal stories, educational dilemmas, and political activism, offering deep insights into Deafhood.
