Please join the Northeast-Midwest Institute (NEMWI) for the first session of the Great Lakes Primer and Orientation Program on Tuesday, May 9th, at 2 pm EDT, via webinar. The webinar will focus on the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI).
The Great Lakes Primer and Orientation Program is designed to help educate new Congressional staff on critical Great Lakes issues, but is open to all who wish to learn more about the GLRI. This ongoing policy education program is made possible through the support of the Erb Family Foundation.
The GLRI has been a critical federal program in improving the environmental and ecological health of the Great Lakes while also growing the region’s economy. Since its inception in 2010, the GLRI has invested approximately $5 billion to support more than 6,850 projects that have accelerated efforts to protect and restore the Great Lakes. This multi-agency program has provided funding to 16 federal organizations to target the biggest threats to the Great Lakes ecosystem strategically and to accelerate progress toward achieving key long-term goals that include restoring critical habitat, improving water quality, eliminating harmful algal blooms, and preventing invasive species from entering the Great Lakes. This federal investment has provided long-term environmental and economic benefits for the Great Lakes states.
The webinar will provide an overview of the GLRI and a snapshot of GLRI success stories. Panelists will discuss the continued need for federal support for the program. Participating organizations will include:
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO)
Great Lakes Commission
Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition
