Congressional Breakfast Reception Is This Wednesday
As part of Great Lakes Week, the Northeast-Midwest Institute and the Great Lakes Commission are co-sponsoring the Great Lakes Day 2022 Congressional Breakfast Reception this Wednesday, March 2, at 9 a.m. EST. The Breakfast will be held virtually and will feature remarks on Great Lakes priorities by regional leaders and Members of Congress who play a critical role in shaping Great Lakes policies. Registration for this annual event is still open and can be found here.
Additionally, the Great Lakes Commission, in partnership with other regional partners, will host a series of Great Lakes “Coffee Hour” sessions during the week of February 28 through March 4. These sessions will last approximately 45 minutes and will feature remarks from senior Administration officials and Members of Congress. More information about these sessions can be found here.
NEMWI Launches Manufacturing Legislative Tracker,
Highlights Progress of America COMPETES Act
NEMWI's latest legislative tracker keeps tabs on bills on manufacturing policy in the U.S. Congress. One bill in particular that is making progress in Congress is Representative Eddie Johnson’s “America COMPETES Act”. This bill directs the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) to implement a National Engineering Biology Research and Development Initiative to advance societal well-being, national security, sustainability, and economic productivity and competitiveness. Among other activities, the initiative must include sustained support for research centers, individual investigators, technologies, and training.
This bill was introduced on July 21, 2021 and passed the House on February 4, 2022. On February 17 it was received in the Senate, read for the first time, and placed on the Senate Legislative Calendar under “read for the first time”.
The Manufacturing Legislative Tracker is monitoring a total of 77 bills, including 44 in the U.S. House, and 33 in the U.S. Senate. Explore the tracker here.
