NEMWI Co-Hosts Congressional Breakfast in Celebration of the Great Lakes
The Northeast-Midwest Institute (NEMWI), along with the Great Lakes Commission, co-hosted the annual Congressional Great Lakes Breakfast Reception last Thursday in celebration of Great Lakes Day in Washington. Great Lakes Day is an annual event that brings together regional leaders and members of Congress who play a critical role in shaping Great Lakes policies.
The event drew more than 200 Great Lakes stakeholders and promoted high-level discussion about critical Great Lakes priorities at the federal level. The program included an introduction by Ms. Erika Jensen, the Executive Director of the Great Lakes Commission, and was moderated by both Matt McKenna, the Director of the Great Lakes Program at NEMWI, and Eric Brown, the Senior Advisor for External Relations at the Great Lakes Commission.
Speakers at the breakfast included Senate Great Lakes Task Force Co-Chairs Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and J.D. Vance (R-OH); House Great Lakes Co-Chair Debbie Dingell (D-MI); Senate Great Lakes Task Force Members Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Gary Peters (D-MI); and House Great Lakes Task Force Member Frank Mrvan (D-IN). In addition to the Congressional remarks, Member of the Canadian Parliament Vance Badewey provided perspectives from across the border.
Additionally, in coordination with Great Lakes Day, a binational coalition of regional agencies, Indigenous nations, legislators, local communities, and business, maritime and environmental groups released shared priorities for restoring the Great Lakes and supporting the region’s economy. The shared priorities can be found here.
