Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) Act
On January 1, 2020 the new Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act came into effect. Now, the primary responsibility for conducting animal cruelty and welfare investigations have transferred from humane societies like ours to government inspectors.

"The PAWS Act will better protect animals in Ontario and result in tougher penalties and higher fines for individuals who abuse and neglect animals," says Steve Ryall, HSLM Executive Director. "In fact, Ontario now has the the strongest penalties in Canada for people who violate animal welfare laws."

The PAWS Act includes the introduction of new inspectors with specialized expertise in livestock, zoos, aquariums, equines and more in order to provide province-wide coverage. On top of this, the province will also update prohibitions and obligations, such as barring the return of dog fighting equipment to a person convicted of an offence and harming or attempting to harm a service animal or one that works with peace officers.
