Welcome Our New Principal Organist
We are pleased to announce that Donald Livingston has been named Principal Organist at Hennepin Avenue UMC, and his first Sunday will be October 20. Don served as organist here from 1999–2005, and has most recently been organist at St. Martin Evangelical Lutheran Church in Austin, TX where he also serves as Lecturer at the Butler School of Music of University of TX. He will be continuing to serve as founding director and executive manager of the Twin Cities Early Music Festival!
Additional good news! We've named Michelle Gehrz as our Assistant Organist. Michelle will be at the ready when Don cannot be in two states at the same time–as well as being available for funerals and some weddings. Michelle has served brilliantly as our Interim Organist this summer.
Both of these talented musicians will help us minister effectively and beautifully through music; both are proven artists who connect well with folks not yet connected with Hennepin Avenue UMC!

Contribute to Hennepin's Advent Devotionals
This Advent, we will be exploring "Holy Surprises!"–all the ways that God's activity eclipses cultural norms, upends our expectations, and surprises us.
How have you been surprised by the initiative of God or God's people in the world? What encouragement do you find in God's favor of the lowly over the mighty, of the call to turn swords into plowshares, or in a child coming to lead the people? Where do you find hope that new movements can be born?
You are invited to submit a short reflection, essay, or poem, 250 words or less, on the theme of "Holy Surprises!" for Hennepin's Advent devotional booklet.
Please submit to communications@haumc.org by Friday, October 25

Soul Cafe:
Milestones
October 27, 7pm in the Art Gallery
In the long history of jazz, perhaps no one has been a more prolific innovator than trumpeter Miles Davis. Miles re-invented himself almost every decade, starting in his teens. In the process he kept expanding the vocabulary of jazz, adding new sounds, new colors and new options for musicians to explore.
We will sample Miles’ music across these decades including some of his biggest hits. To accompany these milestones in the life of a great jazz artist, we have found poetry that marks turning points of our lives and our times. To do justice to the wide range of Miles Davis music, we are excited to add two guests musicians to this performance: Omar Abdulkarim and JT Bates.
Bring a friend! $10 requested donation.

Fall Art Display
September 8 - October 27 in the Art Gallery
The Fine Arts Team is proud to present their fall sculpture show,
Family
, featuring the artistry of Zimbabwe Shona artists, from the Curator Rex Mhiripiri of Mhiripiri Galleries. Mhiripiri has one of the largest collections of Zimbabwe sculpture in the world outside Zimbabwe.
Shona sculpture is most often carved from serpentine or verdite stone, and derives its name from the majority tribe in Zimbabwe, the Mashona. The heritage and ancient tradition of working stone in this part of Africa has existed for centuries. Zimbabwe literally translates to "large house of stone.”
Serpentine comes in many different forms, colors and degrees of hardness: black, green, yellow, brown, gray and mixtures of different colors within the same stone. The intensely hard stone of Springstone, is often chosen among the more prominent artists because of its prestige and difficulty to carve. Verdite is highly prized and rare semiprecious stone which is predominantly green, but is also found in bronze and brown. Granite, rapoko and soapstone are also used by Shona sculptors.
Zimbabwe stone artists have achieved world recognition, and have had their work exhibited in major galleries and museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Rodin museum in France.

A Passion for Drawing:
Musings in the Moment
An Exhibition of Artworks by Anita White
“When difficulties arise… drawing is a way to find empathy and humor.” –Anita White
The Hennepin Avenue UMC Fine Arts Committee is excited to present the art of Anita White for our upcoming exhibit in Carlson Hall, on display October 24 through November 31. You will have two chances to meet the artist and ask questions about her work–details coming soon!
White graduated in 1974 with honors from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and lives in South Minneapolis near Minnehaha Falls. Her time living on an Irish island for three and half years created a deep sense of telling the story of place and people through drawing. These feelings shaped her travels to Mexico and Romania which also inspired her art work. Early travels to Spain in 1969 and later in 1987 sparked a love of drawing flamenco which continues to the present day.
Drawing has also been a way for White to process and bear witness to life’s deeper moments. She drew her way through the care-taking of her parents and her brother’s mental health challenges. White created dozens of
pen and watercolor sketches in ambulances, hospital rooms, and in the emergency department waiting room.
She drew, she said, through “panic, anxiety and healing”–which included drawing
her late husband Josh’s medical issues. White calls this art “Narrative Medicine,” many examples of which are now on long term display at Hennepin HealthCare. White explains:
“Drawing is a way to navigate daily life. A way to interact and honor others.
To find joy and beauty and the hidden humor that bubbles up in challenging moments.”
Experience Anita White's work in Carlson Hall this fall!
