New
Park Planned for South Loop
Resident-Friendly
and Dog-Friendly Areas Included
Chicago
Park District planners and the contracted architects of Altamanu
Inc. presented two plan concpets recently to Ald. Fioretti and
neighbors during a public meeting held in the 1st District Chicago
Police Community Room.
The new park at Sixteenth Street
and Wabash Avenue, 1629 S. Wabash Ave., is in the early stages
of development wherein we are asking for community input on concept
designs. Our anticipated
schedule is to complete design over the winter and to begin
construction sometime in the summer of 2011. This schedule is
subject to many variables and could likely
change.
Park
concept "A" is show above. Park concept "B" is show below. For more
information and to make comments, please email the project team
at: 1629Wabash@gmail.com
To
help keep this project on schedule, please provide your comments by
December 20, 2010. Please note there will be additional, future
opportunities for your input as this project develops.
Site context: The new park site is located at 1611 to
1629 S. Wabash Ave. The total site is approximately 1.1 acres. It
is currently vacant property bordered on the north by True Rock
Ministries and on the south by private commercial property, which
will be a new restaurant. Wabash Avenue borders the west side of
the site and an alley borders the east.
Project goal: To develop the site into a thriving new park
that will serve the South Loop community. Based on initial
community feedback and programming needs in the community, the site
is being designed for public space to enjoy among trees
and landscaping and dog-friendly areas with modern, sanitary
designs for small dogs and for large dogs.
We
look forward to working with you to make yet another new park a
true asset to the residents of the 2nd Ward.

Winter
Parking Ban Begins
Please
remember to watch for and follow all posted winter parking
regulations. This
Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010, marks the return of Chicago's annual
snow-related parking restrictions. It is one of the few things we
can all accurately predict during a Chicago winter. The City's
winter overnight parking ban imposes parking restrictions for
approximately 107 miles of Chicago's most critical arterial streets
and is enforced no matter if it snows or not.
This
seasonal ban in effect every year between Dec.1, 2010, and April 1,
2011. and between the hours of 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. It resumes on
Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010, at 3 a.m., which means when you go to
sleep that Tuesday night, the ban will already be in effect when
you wake up on Wednesday morning.

Trader Joe's Coming to the South
Loop
It seems that South Loop residents have
been excited about the rumor of specialty food and
beverage retailer Trader Joe's looking at a South Loop location for
a long time. Now, Trader Joe's recent application for City business
licenses makes it official such that we can say that Trader Joe's
is planning a new Chicago location at 1147 S. Wabash Ave., at
Roosevelt Road in the historic Trailways building. With
the buildout of their store and the construction of a new,
below-ground parking area, it is anticipated this store will open
sometime in 2011.
