Dear District 2 neighbors,

Happy New Year! I look forward to continuing to keep you engaged and updated throughout my final term as your District 2 City Councilmember. I hope you enjoy important information and event invitations below as we kick off 2024 and resume meetings.

Updates in & around the City

At my monthly District 2 Office Hours, I welcome you to ask questions, share concerns, and make suggestions for your neighborhood or the City of San José.

Next upcoming Office Hours:

Monday, January 22nd, 2024

5:30 - 7:00 p.m.

Edenvale Library - Study Room B

Information about my District 2 Office Hours schedule for 2024:

There will be no February Office Hours due to the City Holiday. We will meet again on Monday, March 25th via Zoom.

My team and I will continue to alternate between in-person and Zoom Office Hours to accommodate as many residents as possible.

Though our monthly Office Hours are regularly scheduled for the 3rd Monday of the month, some months' 3rd Monday falls on a holiday -- or some months have scheduling conflicts. Please look out for e-mails and social media posts about what day we will reschedule these Office Hours to. Please note that there will be no July Office Hours due to the City Council recess.

The San José Police Department is in the process of making changes to how it deploys personnel throughout the City. It has engaged a consultant, Matrix Consulting Group, to assist with this evaluation. When the redistricting report is completed in 2025, SJPD will have a blueprint for new deployment models, geographic boundaries, and staffing plans, among other actionable items.

The Police Department is currently in Phase 2 of the process in which the redistricting consultant will be conducting community outreach. 10 community meetings will be planned — one for each Council District.

We encourage as many District 2 residents as possible to attend, either in person or virtually.

Through these meetings, Matrix aims to gain a clear understanding of what community members in San José expect from their Police Department in terms of community engagement, responsiveness and proactivity, including potential strategies to improve service delivery.

One of my priorities approved in the City's Budget FY 2023-2024 was to turn a vacant parcel, located at Senter Road & Serenade Way, into a beautified location that neighbors can appreciate and use.

After gathering feedback from residents, we learned that most would like to see a pocket park developed here -- to beautify our neighborhood and make it useful to the community.

You are invited to join us and the City's Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services Department for a:

Senter & Serenade Pocket Park Project Community Meeting

Wednesday, January 17th

You are invited to:

It was a privilege at our January 9th City Council meeting to recognize and commend the Oak Grove High School TEENS ENDING ABUSE (TEA) CLUB for their outstanding leadership, outreach, and contributions to systemic and community change.

The TEA Club was started in 2018 to address the important issue of gender-based violence. Their Mission is to instill confidence, validate strengths, and equip young individuals with knowledge and resources. Through their collaborative work, youth build upon their advocacy skills to recognize and address social injustice.

They host campus-wide awareness campaigns to bring crucial knowledge to their peers on teen dating and sexual violence prevention, cyber-safety, human trafficking, and bystander intervention.

Their outstanding efforts contributed to Oak Grove High School adopting a policy that makes gender-neutral bathrooms more accessible for every student.

The Oak Grove TEA Club was recently honored with the YWCA Empowerment Award at the YWCA Golden Gate Silicon Valley Inspire Luncheon, which is given to community advocates who exemplify leadership and empowerment.

Thank you to the students and staff who came to represent the TEA Club and accept the commendation! We share your vision for a future where youth voices are valued, amplified, and integral to shaping a compassionate and inclusive community.

San José residents: It's easy and FREE to get rid of your junk!

Make an appointment, set out your junk, and City’s solid waste contractors will pick it up. You can schedule a free junk pickup appointment by calling your recycling collection company. Junk pickups are scheduled on the same day of the week as the customer’s normal recycling collection, but may occur at a different time of day. For more information, visit SJEnvironment.org/junkpickup.

Thank you for keeping our City clean and combating illegal dumping!

Resources & Information

Get involved: District 2 Neighborhood Associations

Neighborhood Associations (N.A.s) are established groups of community members who meet and collaborate to work towards common goals such as: beautification/clean-up efforts, safety enhancements, improvement projects, informational town halls, and social events. N.A.s serve as a connection between the community and City Hall. The District 2 Office is here to support N.A.'s by providing direction, resources, grants, help with outreach, models for success, and more.

View the interactive map of D2 Neighborhood Associations on my website to find your N.A. or work with my office to start a N.A. in your area!
