My injuries are an opportunity to learn how to heal myself and ask for help. Many of you know that a few months ago I could barely walk because of excruciating knee pain on my right side. It was so bad that I compiled a list of ortho doctors. I was convinced I needed surgery. But none of the pain patterns were pointing me towards the source of the problem which I thought was in my knee joint. The source of the pain was really my guts. Because of my wacky schedule, I was eating late and when I did eat I was really hungry so I would inhale my food, fast! That lead to my diaphragm seizing around my rib cage. When I told my chiropractor, Doctor Malmad of Chiropractic Healing Arts, she proceeded to test me for a hiatal hernia. This is a passage from the esophagus through the diaphragm on the way to the stomach. In Jin Shin Jyutsu we prefer to call "problems", "projects". So I had another project. When Dr. Malmad corrected my stomach project, my knee project immediately changed and after a few more closely scheduled sessions, I was back in action! I did my Jin Shin self help with attention towards the stomach and small intestine meridians. The actions also included me making some serious food changes. In Ayurveda, we know that timing is everything and that our food habits inform everything else. When we apply the intelligence of timing to our daily routine, we use the help of nature to amplify our health. So I started eating easily digestible, cooked foods with the sunlight of the day and scheduled time to eat in silence. While I was eating I tuned into the vitality and energy I received from the Earth with gratitude and deep appreciation.
When people come to see me, they are usually coming with lots of mysterious symptoms that allopathic medicine dismisses. The part that really bums me out is that people get so easily discouraged or end up getting costly surgeries that take lots of money and time to resolve their mysteries. My position as a holistic care provider is to listen to your patterns and trajectories. If you tell me you were twisting and hurt your back and now you can't get out of the car, I'm going to give you abdominal massage to address the front of the spine. I'm going to ask a lot of questions so I know what you do with your body: Lifting grandkids, playing golf, working 12 hours a day seated in front of a screen. I approach your project with a plan. I usually work around the site of pain to release the tension and regain balance and structural support of the body. If your project has been years in the making, you will be encouraged to consider scheduling your sessions with more frequency. That's how this works, the more you get this new information rooted in the body, the more you will get relief and recovery. My work is based in the intelligence of the body to want to heal itself.
