Nominations for the 2024 Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts are NOW OPEN!
The New Mexico Arts Commission and the New Mexico Arts Division announce a call for nominations for the 2024 Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts. Each year, the Governor recognizes the extraordinary contributions and achievement of individuals and organizations in New Mexico.
Nominations are only open to organizations and living artists in New Mexico. Nominations may be made by any New Mexico resident except for New Mexico Arts Commissioners and New Mexico Arts Division staff. Please note: Galleries may not nominate artists they represent. Self-nominations and nominations by immediate family or members of the same household will not be accepted.

Announcing the 2024 New Mexico Poetry Out Loud Champion, Kaitlyn Lubega.
Kaitlyn attends UWC-USA in Montezuma, NM. Next, Kaitlyn will represent New Mexico at the National Finals in Washington DC. from April 30 to May 2, 2024. More than $50,000 in awards and school/organizational stipends will be distributed and the National champion will receive a $20,000 prize. Congratulations Kaitlyn!
New Mexico Arts is honored to recognize the students, teachers, parents, performers, and volunteers that came together to celebrate poetry. It was an enchanting afternoon for all.

On Monday, March 18, New Mexico Arts' Olivia Amaya Ortiz, AIPP Project Coordinator, recorded an Instagram Live conversation with NMA 2024 Artist-in-Residence, Marcus Xavier Chormicle (Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians/Chicano), a Las Cruces-based multidisciplinary photographer.
Since late February, Chormicle has been in residence at Lincoln Historic Site in Lincoln, NM.
The mission of the NMA Artist-in-Residence Program, in partnership with New Mexico Historic Sites, is to increase awareness of significant state cultural sites through the lens of contemporary creatives.
While in residence, Chormicle is exploring the legacy of the Oryx species in Southern New Mexico as it relates to colonizing histories of land and peoples in the region. He intends to deepen his understanding of the Oryx habitat as well as create visual representations of the animal across the Lincoln Forest, Sacramento Mountains and surrounding communities.

New Mexico Arts 2024-2029 Strategic Plan
New Mexico Arts worked in collaboration with SV Pratt Creative Strategies to develop the agency’s five-year plan with input from stakeholders across New Mexico, feedback from colleagues and peers around the country, consideration of regional and national state arts agency trends, and with the goal of dynamically supporting the continuously evolving arts and culture sector in New Mexico and beyond while positioning NMA for future growth.
This plan—rooted in longstanding values—frames MNA’s next phase of innovation within four overarching goals:
1) Center equity, accessibility, and inclusion in all programs and policies,
2) Deliver responsive, impactful, and sustainable programs,
3) Effectively communicate the value of arts in community,
4) Align agency to support strategic goals.
We welcome your feedback on this living document as we work together to ensure all New Mexicans have access to arts programs and services that represent the broad range of cultural expression in our diverse and beautiful state.

Attention Filmmakers: The Santa Fe Film Institute
has opened up applications for two new grants available this year.
Both grants have geographical restrictions: Applicants for either the $5,000 Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area Grant or the $10,000 Los Luceros Grant must reside in Santa Fe County, Taos County or Rio Arriba County to apply—or have attended and graduated from high school in one of those counties.
To apply for the Los Luceros grant, applicants must shoot at least part of their films at the Los Luceros Historic Site north of Alcalde in Rio Arriba County.

New Mexico Brewers Guild is partnering with Zozobra to help celebrate the 100th burning! Any New Mexican resident may submit artwork but preference will be given to any artist who works at a current NMBG member brewery.
New Mexico Pint Glass Day will be held on Wednesday, June 26th, 2024. Glassware order forms will be available to members after the artwork is selected. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Santa Fe Kiwanis in honor of Old Man Gloom himself.

In Old Sky
by Lauren Camp
Poet Lauren Camp was selected as the fourth Astronomer-in-Residence at Grand Canyon National Park. She spent a month in Grand Canyon exploring the Park‘s pristine natural darkness and night phenomena, as well as the vast power of the Canyon itself. In Old Sky grew out of that experience. This is the first poetry book published by Grand Canyon Conservancy. It includes color photos across and into the Canyon and out to the cosmos, as well as an epic poem assembled from hundreds of responses by visitors to Grand Canyon National Park during the month of Camp’s residency.
As Camp writes in “Arena,”
The sky is out again, galloping on its inherited ribbon. It’s so easy
to stand under it: the whole pulse
of the world, the dead stars, clouds slinking around, thinking rain,
thinking landless, then giving up on that
and wandering slow with a thought of tomorrow.
