A few words from our Executive Director | |
|
I am thrilled to reflect on the remarkable progress we made in August. In the past month, we celebrated four home closings, a significant achievement that underscores our commitment to providing safe and affordable housing. Each closing represents a family taking another step towards stability and independence.
Adding to these joyous celebrations, we approved 11 new homeowners-in-process (HIP's) embarking on their exciting journeys to becoming St. Lucie Habitat homeowners; a testament to our mission's ongoing success.
Our 6th annual 'Battle of the Bags' Cornhole Tournament was a resounding success and so much fun! The event not only fostered a sense of community but also reinforced our shared commitment to improving lives. As we look forward to the coming months, I am filled with gratitude for your continued support and participation in our cause.
As the new school year has come to a start, our community faces a serious shortage of affordable housing for working families in St. Lucie County. What determines affordability? According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, housing is generally considered affordable when a household spends no more than 30% of its monthly income on housing costs. According to the most recent United Way ALICE report (Asset Limited, Income constrained, Employed) – 34% of St. Lucie County families are ALICE households. These households earn more than the Federal Poverty Level but less than the basic cost of living in the county. This contributes to the growing need for building affordable, accessible housing in our community.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to St. Lucie Habitat for Humanity. Together, we are making a difference with every home we build.
