Reflection from Fr. Joseph

We conclude our three-week series looking at the Church Fathers with a connection to yesterday’s feast – did the Church Fathers have anything to say about Our Lady?

Absolutely! It would be hard to find a group of men more devoted to Her. Their writings reflect their great love and esteem for the Mother of God. The first one I quote was not a saint because of the dubiousness of his personal life, but still has some of the best theological writings: Origen. He writes this about Mary’s Perpetual Virginity:

[It is tradition that] the brethren of Jesus were sons of Joseph by a former wife, whom he married before Mary. Now those who say so wish to preserve the honor of Mary in virginity to the end, so that body of hers which was appointed to minister to the Word . . . might not know intercourse with a man after the Holy Spirit came into her and the power from on high overshadowed her. And I think it in harmony with reason that Jesus was the firstfruit among men of the purity which consists in [perpetual] chastity, and Mary was among women. For it were not pious to ascribe to any other than to her the firstfruit of virginity.

Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of the greatest of the Church Fathers, St. Augustine. The patron saint of our diocese (whose feast we celebrate later this month), his writings still inform our understanding of the Faith. He was one of many Fathers who clearly believed that Mary had no sin. He writes this:

Having excepted the holy Virgin Mary, concerning whom, on account of the honor of the Lord, I wish to have absolutely no question when treating of sins—for how do we know what abundance of grace for the total overcoming of sin was conferred upon her, who merited to conceive and bear him in whom there was no sin?—so, I say, with the exception of the Virgin, if we could have gathered together all those holy men and women, when they were living here, and had asked them whether they were without sin, what do we suppose would have been their answer?

Finally, it was hotly debated in the early Church as to whether we could call Mary the Mother of God. Wouldn’t that somehow make Her greater than God? How could God need a mother? Certainly she gave birth to the human nature of Christ, but does that mean she is the mother of His Divinity? The Fathers were unanimous in calling Her “Mother of God”:

St. Gregory of Naziansus: If anyone does not agree that holy Mary is Mother of God, he is at odds with the God Himself.

St. Jerome: Do not marvel at the novelty of the thing, if a Virgin gives birth to God!

St. Theodore of Mopsuestia (who wins the award for coolest name!): When, therefore, they ask, ‘Is Mary mother of man or Mother of God?’ we answer, ‘Both!’ The one by the very nature of what was done and the other by relation.

St. Cyril of Alexandria: I have been amazed that some are utterly in doubt as to whether or not the holy Virgin is able to be called the Mother of God. For if our Lord Jesus Christ is God, how should the holy Virgin who bore him not be the Mother of God?

So, my friends, it’s amazing to see that all of the Church Fathers believed the same things we do! Our faith is not some later Medieval invention – no, it has been handed down from the very beginning, from those Fathers who were the pillars of what we believe!

Once again this year, we will be offering weekly Eucharistic Adoration every Monday from 9am-9pm, starting Monday, September 9th. Even if you are unable to commit, please make an effort to stop by the Church to visit Our Lord and keep Him company on Mondays - He will richly reward you with graces beyond measure!

Backpack Blessing

Our annual Backpack Blessing takes place the weekend of August 31/September 1 (Labor Day Weekend) - be sure to bring your backpacks to Mass to have them blessed as we embark upon a new school year!

Young Parishioners Heading To Seminary - Wish Them Well!

We are blessed to have not one but TWO native sons of the parish who will be starting or resuming seminary in the Fall! Colin Firda, a recent graduate of St. Joseph's High School in Trumbull and an active member of our parish, will be starting at St. Charles Seminary in Philadelphia (studying for our diocese) this coming week. Max Lock, whose family has been parishioners for three years, continues his studies at St. Charles as well. Both young men will be serving every Mass this coming Sunday and we will have a small coffee and donuts reception after Mass to wish them well - please plan to join us to offer your prayers and well-wishes as these two young men take another step towards the priesthood!

Family Retreat!

For many years, I've been longing and desiring to do something for families...a summer getaway where they can combine their Catholic Faith with a ton of fun in a relaxed, joyful atmosphere.

Well, I'm happy to announce that this dream has become a reality! The West Point Mini Family Fest will take place September 6-8 near West Point, NY! What is a Family Fest?

  • Daily Mass
  • Beach and water fun on the lake
  • Confession
  • Talks for different age groups
  • Adoration
  • Sports
  • Games
  • Hiking
  • Rosary
  • Roasting Marshmallows
  • Good food
  • Hanging out with other awesome families who love the Lord!

This Family Fest is being put on by the Apostolate for Family Consecration, which is an organization that hosts family retreats all over the country. It is not an exaggeration to say that I owe my priestly vocation to them, as I used to go on their Family Fests when I was growing up! It was hugely impactful in my own faith journey - and a tremendous amount of fun!

It is my hope to get five families from St. Jude's to give it a try this summer.

You can find out more information at https://afc.org/catholic-family-retreat-weekend/ - I'll be there - and I hope to see you there, too!

Red Cross Blood Drive Thank You

The recent Blood Drive in the Social Hall resulted in 42 usable pints of blood. Red Cross targeted 38 for collection so this drive is considered a success! While we would always hope for a higher number, July is vacation time and many of the regular donors would likely be away. So thank you to those who donated and, to those who might be interested in donating, the next drive at St. Jude's is on Saturday, September 21. You can sign up by going to www.redcrossblood.org
