New Beginnings 05/03/2024

Reflection from Fr. Joseph

You may have noticed that sometimes during the Easter Season, our organist has played a short pre-closing-hymn song, in Latin. What is that all about?

These are the “Marian Antiphons”! But what does that mean?

First, let’s examine what an “antiphon” is. An antiphon is a short verse from Scripture that forms a theme in a liturgy, often repeated. For example, the response part of the “Responsorial Psalm” is considered an antiphon. You may have noticed that our organist also sometimes sings a pre-opening-hymn or pre-Communion-hymn verse – that is the Entrance Antiphon and Communion Antiphon, respectively. They are actually part of the liturgy, so they cannot be changed – they are universal (every Catholic in the entire world sings or recites the same antiphons on the Fifth Sunday of Easter, for example).

Many people associate “the liturgy” with the Mass, but the word “liturgy” simply means the public worship of the Church. All of the Sacraments are liturgies, and there is another liturgy called the “Liturgy of the Hours” which priests and nuns are vowed to pray daily (and the laity are also encouraged to learn it). The Liturgy of the Hours is based on the Psalms, and we pray psalms at five separate times during the day (Morning Prayer [called Lauds], Daytime Prayer, Evening Prayer [called Vespers], Night Prayer [called Compline] and one that can be done at any time known as the Office of Readings [called Matins – in monasteries this is prayed in the middle of the night!]).

All the way back in 1239, Pope Gregory XI decreed that at the end of the Liturgy of the Hours every day, there is to be a prayer to Mary. Four specific Latin prayers, all of which have ancient roots, were chosen, and used at specific times and seasons.

Alma Redemptoris Mater is sung during Advent and Christmas. Ave Regina Caelorum is sung during Lent. Regina Caeli is sung during Easter, and Salve Regina is sung during Ordinary Time.

This has begun to be adopted for Mass, as well as for the Liturgy of the Hours. I encourage you to search on Youtube for a recording of these four beautiful Marian hymns in Latin. The words are immensely powerful, and the music is solemn, sacred, and hauntingly beautiful. We will be singing more of them throughout the year – I would encourage you to sing with us!

The Music of May

For centuries, the Catholic Church has set aside the entire month, not just a day but a month, to honor Mary, the Mother of God. That month, May, is upon us. In medieval times, customs and rituals abounded to "expel winter" as May 1st was considered the beginning of new growth, and yet again we see how the seasons in nature were influences for the supernatural. May would be called "Mary Month" later during the baroque period with special devotions that frequently lasted a 30 day period. With the change in the natural season in full bloom and life budding from the colder winter months, just like Mary gave new life to the world when she carried and bore a son, Jesus Christ, Mother Church has retained May as a special give thanks to the Mother of our Savior. As music is twice praying, the hymns on Sunday will reflect our special devotion to Mary as a parish. Each weekend, a different Marian Hymn (or two) will be in the rotation. Please lift your voices in song to honor this most-amazing woman!

Sunday's Flame of Love Event at Saint Jude

Last Sunday we were blessed to host the first ever Connecticut Flame of Love Prayer Meeting and Conference! With close to 80 people in attendance it was a huge success. John Sullivan, the newly appointed International Coordinator for the Flame of Love Movement, and Victoria Palmer, the Northeast Regional Coordinator came to join all of the CT area cenacles and leaders to join in fellowship, prayer and talks by John Sullivan.

John's talks are available on the parish website and all are encouraged to take a listen as they are so practical and informative. The grace of the Flame of Love is simply asking for Mary's burning fire of love for her Son Jesus in our own hearts and passing it from heart to heart so that Satan's evil can be blinded and her Immaculate Heart can triumph. The Flame of Love is for everyone! To learn more, see Anita Flynn or Jessica Iannotta and grab a brochure or prayer card in the church foyer this weekend!

Blessed Lady, Spread the effect of grace of thy Flame of Love over all of humanity!
