Reflection from Fr. Joseph

Last week we began a three-part series about growing older. Today I’d like to take a moment to consider an unfortunate part of the process: the inevitable aches and pains that come with aging.

We live in a culture that, unfortunately, worships youth. People spend thousands of dollars on creams and injections, surgery and therapy, to make themselves look and feel younger. And, on one level, that is understandable – when we see our bodies breaking down, we are confronted with the reality of our own mortality. One might even question the Lord: why is it that we must go through the aches, pains, and distress of losing our vigor?

But from a Christian perspective, the slow decline of our bodies, appearances, and even our minds is a great gift and invitation.

I believe that God has orchestrated our bodies to experience greater limitations and pains because, as we age, we should be at the point in our spiritual lives where everything is a self-offering to the Lord. We should have such intimacy with Him that we are constantly offering everything to Him as an act of love. All that the Lord has given us is a gift, not something we are owed – and when we willingly relinquish our youth and energy, vigor and health, then we give the gift back to the Giver. He will take it either way, but if we give it freely, offering it back to Him as a living sacrifice, then we are profoundly offering Him the greatest act of self-surrender.

St. Paul tells us that we can “make up what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ.” (Colossians 1:24). At first glance this sounds odd – what is lacking in Christ’s sacrifice? Wasn’t the Cross the only sacrifice needed? Yes, but remember that St. Paul says that the Church is “the Body of Christ”. What happened to the Head (Christ) must also happen in the Body (the Church). So we show our unity with Christ when we suffer in union with Him. Plus, it is a noble vocation to be asked to imitate Christ in His sufferings! As St. Therese of Lisieux said, “The greatest honor that God can pay to anyone is not to give him much, but to ask much from him.” Christ invites His choicest friends to dwell with Him on the Cross!

Christ invites us to help Him save the world! Suffering, freely offered to God, can call down graces and blessings. So offer your sufferings to Him – for the conversion of sinners, for those who have fallen away from the Church, for the souls in Purgatory, for the Church, for our parish. Even if you feel like you have no mission in life because perhaps you are homebound or in pain, yet your mission of love through self-sacrifice and self-offering is changing the world, in a hidden way. Suffering is the tangible artform of love.

There is another reason for our sufferings, too – it can help to take away our time in Purgatory. Throughout our lives, particularly in our younger years, we have developed vices which warp our souls, and we will need to have the Image of Christ refashioned within us – which is a painful process. Either we endure the pain here, out of love, or we will be forced to endure the purifying pains of Purgatory. If we suffer well here, we can reduce or even eliminate the need for purification in the next life!

Sadly, many people waste this great gift of suffering by complaining about it (my family used to call it “organ recitals” when people would say, “this organ hurts, that organ hurts!”). It’s far too easy to lapse into self-pity when it is a struggle even to get out of bed, or when one must give up a favorite activity due to physical or mental limitations. We must resist the temptation to complain, grow bitter, or resent the sufferings that come with age. On the contrary, through the lens of Christ, it is a great honor to be chosen to bear His Cross with Him.

Final installment on the series of growing older in two weeks…

The Women of Walking with Purpose

Invite you to join us for a study on Prayer:

Prayer: Finding Intimacy with God

Though prayer is one of the essentials of a thriving faith, we often feel as if we’re talking to ourselves—or, worse, as if we’re talking to no one at all. How can something so vital to the Faith be so elusive? Lectio: Prayer was created to help us find intimacy with God through effective, conversational prayer.

Wednesday evenings 6 – 7:30,

beginning April 17th, through May 22nd (6 weeks)

Our evening will consist of a 30 minute video followed by a discussion.

Cost - $10 for the Study Guide

Please RSVP to Annette Bonomo – abonomo200@earthlink.net

Or Regina Schwartz – regschwartz@gmail.com

33 Days to Morning Glory

Marian Consecration Study

Join us on Friday mornings for Fr. Michael Gaitley’s preparation for Marian Consecration.

During this study, you will find the best Marian teachings of St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Mother Teresa and St. John Paul II – all presented so simply and clearly.

33 Days to Morning Glory will deepen the understanding of Marian consecration for both those who desire to make the consecration for the first time and those who have already made it. You will be led to a closer union with Our Blessed Mother as she draws you closer to her Son.

We will meet Friday mornings in the Social Hall

from 9:30am to 11am

for 6 consecutive weeks beginning April 26th

and running through May 31st, the Feast of the Visitation.

Even if you have read or attended a previous 33 Days to Morning Glory study, please join us and re-consecrate yourself! It is suggested to renew the consecration yearly.

Cost of the materials is $25, which includes the book and study guide. If you already have the book, the study guide alone is $20.

Divine Mercy Images Now Available!

Our parish order of 8 x 10 Divine Mercy images did not come in time for Divine Mercy Sunday but Our Lord wants us to proclaim His great Mercy year round!

Jesus told Saint Faustina, Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You. I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over [its] enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death. I Myself will defend it as My own glory (Diary, 47, 48). I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You (327). I desire that this image be venerated, first in your chapel, and [then] throughout the world (47).

Pick up in the parish vestibule. Jesus, we trust in You!
