NEW ARRIVALS

STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS

The Cemetery of Untold Stories by Julia Alvarez. A famous Dominican novelist decides to retire and bury all her unfinished stories in a cemetery. She hires a local caretaker to watch over the graveyard and "listen" to the untold stories, stories that refuse to be forgotten, that come alive and intertwine with the other buried stories and with the living stories of the caretaker and the novelist herself. What emerges is a complex tale of sisterhood, complicated families, and how we are haunted by the things we meant to finish but never did. A magical tale about storytelling itself. - Alison

Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood by Ed Zwick. This well-written and entertaining Hollywood memoir is SO GOOD. Sure, there are juicy tidbits about movie stars and on-set drama, but Zwick's soulful and introspective viewpoint of a life spent directing, writing and producing for television and cinema takes this book a number of notches above a gossipy tell-all. Having been a fan of his work for years, I was curious about the shows and movies I know best, and pleasantly surprised by the depth of detail about other productions as well. His end-of-chapter lists of advice are terrific guidance for any potential filmmakers out there and very fun. - Carolyn

Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club by J. Ryan Stradal (now in paperback). Humor and heartbreak weave throughout in this fabulous new novel set in fictional Bear Jaw, Minnesota. Two very different restaurant families are blended together when Mariel Stenerud and Ned Prager meet and marry. Her inherited and family-owned local supper club is a world away from the restaurant chain Ned is expected to take over, and each of them must come to terms with their own wishes and desires in the face of family legacies and tragedies. A cast of flawed and lovable characters (including a persnickety parent who's waiting to be picked up at church), hearty food and delicious drinks leap off the page over the course of 85 years...another winner from a beloved author. - Carolyn

After Annie by Anna Quindlen. When Annie Brown dies suddenly (on page 1, I'm not giving anything away), her husband, her children, and her closest friend are left to find a way forward without the woman who has been the linchpin of all their lives. What saves them all is the ongoing presence of Annie; thanks to Quindlen's skill, Annie is not only not forgotten, she's not ever really gone either. She inhabits the lives of all the characters, remaining an influence and continuing to be a source of advice. This is a quiet, lovely study of a family dealing with grief and, eventually, hope. - Hut

The Best Strangers in the World: Stories From a Life Spent Listening by Ari Shapiro (now in paperback). Perhaps like me you've listened to and loved Ari Shapiro's warm and insightful reporting on NPR over the years; his memoir will make you an even bigger fan. He weaves in many behind-the-scenes stories of his reporting adventures with personal revelations about growing up in Oregon, coming out, and becoming an unwitting poster child for same-sex marriage in San Francisco. What shines through on every page is Ari's compassion, kindness and curiosity about the world and what connects us. - Carolyn

Lebron by Jeff Benedict (now in paperback). I'm a big basketball fan, especially of the Warriors, so it felt a little traitorous to go all in with a biography of Lebron James. But I'm glad I did: this book is as entertaining, informative and fascinating as the man himself. The author does a terrific job of tracing and weaving together the various storylines of Lebron's life, from his childhood in poverty to the women, coaches, friends and colleagues that have influenced him and impacted his choices (and puts his "I'm taking my talents to South Beach" blunder in a whole new light). I was left impressed and in awe of this generational talent and human. - Carolyn

Table For Two by Amor Towles. What a gift that we are welcoming a new Amor Towles book into the world! In Table for Two, he gives us six short stories and a longer novella that revisits Evelyn Ross from Rules of Civility (one of my favorite books ever). The stories are mostly set in New York around the year 2000 and are studies of random encounters and impactful decisions, while Eve's section finds her in Los Angeles navigating Hollywood and the studio system in 1938. His writing is so compulsively readable and he builds characters and plot quickly; I felt invested immediately and made sure to savor every sentence and page from this fantastic storyteller. - Carolyn

Bestselling author HOLLY JACKSON signed copies of her new young adult thriller The Reappearance of Rachel Price, which Mrs. Dalloway's bookseller Carolyn Hutton calls "unputdownable!" The story follows one teen's search for the truth about her mother's shocking disappearance--and even more shocking reappearance--during the filming of a true crime documentary.

Oakland author and journalist MARGARET JUHAE LEE signed copies of Starry Field: A Memoir of Lost History, which chronicles her search for her family’s history lost to the darkness of Korea’s colonial decades and contends with the shockwaves of violence that followed them over four generations and across continents.

JONAH NEWMAN is the author of Out of Left Field, his semi-autobiographical LGBTQ+ graphic novel about a nerdy gay teenager who jumps headfirst into the jock-heavy world of high school baseball. In its review, Kirkus called it, "A welcome hit into the outfield of books about queer athletes."
