NEW ARRIVALS

STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS

After Annie by Anna Quindlen. When Annie Brown dies suddenly (on page 1, I'm not giving anything away), her husband, her children, and her closest friend are left to find a way forward without the woman who has been the linchpin of all their lives. What saves them all is the ongoing presence of Annie; thanks to Quindlen's skill, Annie is not only not forgotten, she's not ever really gone either. She inhabits the lives of all the characters, remaining an influence and continuing to be a source of advice. This is a quiet, lovely study of a family dealing with grief and, eventually, hope. - Hut

The Best Strangers in the World: Stories From a Life Spent Listening by Ari Shapiro (now in paperback). Perhaps like me you've listened to and loved Ari Shapiro's warm and insightful reporting on NPR over the years; his memoir will make you an even bigger fan. He weaves in many behind-the-scenes stories of his reporting adventures with personal revelations about growing up in Oregon, coming out, and becoming an unwitting poster child for same-sex marriage in San Francisco. What shines through on every page is Ari's compassion, kindness and curiosity about the world and what connects us. - Carolyn

Lebron by Jeff Benedict (now in paperback). I'm a big basketball fan, especially of the Warriors, so it felt a little traitorous to go all in with a biography of Lebron James. But I'm glad I did: this book is as entertaining, informative and fascinating as the man himself. The author does a terrific job of tracing and weaving together the various storylines of Lebron's life, from his childhood in poverty to the women, coaches, friends and colleagues that have influenced him and impacted his choices (and puts his "I'm taking my talents to South Beach" blunder in a whole new light). I was left impressed and in awe of this generational talent and human. - Carolyn

The Farewell Tour by Stephanie Clifford (now in paperback). Author Clifford has created a fierce, lonely and enigmatic woman in the character of Lillian Waters, a former country music star who has embarked on one last tour before she needs to retire (the reason soon becomes clear). Crisscrossing in time, we learn about Lillian's beginnings in Washington State during the depression and World War II; Clifford brings Walla Walla and Tacoma to life with her vibrant writing and journalistic research into that time period. Lillian has a few secrets, some of them quite poignant, and I found myself rooting for her until the very end. I loved it! - Carolyn

Table For Two by Amor Towles. What a gift that we are welcoming a new Amor Towles book into the world! In Table for Two, he gives us six short stories and a longer novella that revisits Evelyn Ross from Rules of Civility (one of my favorite books ever). The stories are mostly set in New York around the year 2000 and are studies of random encounters and impactful decisions, while Eve's section finds her in Los Angeles navigating Hollywood and the studio system in 1938. His writing is so compulsively readable and he builds characters and plot quickly; I felt invested immediately and made sure to savor every sentence and page from this fantastic storyteller. - Carolyn

The Husbands by Holly Gramazio. A cheeky and delightful multiverse novel where our heroine, Lauren, sends a husband into the attic on an errand and a new husband will descend the stairs with a reset of her life and reality. She discovers what's truly important in love and marriage and encounters a few surprises along the way. What a charming debut! - Hannah

The Reappearance of Rachel Price by Holly Jackson. This young adult thriller by bestselling author Jackson is unputdownable! Bel and her father Charlie have agreed to participate in the filming of a true-crime documentary, focusing on what happened to Bel's mother Rachel 16 years ago when she vanished from her car, leaving toddler Bel behind. The consensus around town is that Rachel is dead; until she suddenly comes wandering into town with quite the harrowing story. Bel, however, is highly suspicious of Rachel and sets about uncovering the truth. The journey to get there is fast-paced and exciting, full of unreliable characters and terrific pacing. I loved every last bit of it! - Carolyn

The Half Moon by Mary Beth Keane (now in paperback). Set in a small Hudson Valley town during an epic blizzard, The Half Moon is a poignant and captivating portrait of a marriage on the rocks. As snow buries the town under a frozen blanket of ice, Malcolm, husband of Jess and the owner of the local dive bar the Half Moon, tries to hold his failing business and life together as secrets start to emerge, old wounds surface, and loyalties are tested. With emotionally complex characters facing down the unfulfilled promises of midlife, Keane's enthralling and well-crafted story reveals the strains fidelity and desire put on friendship, family, and marriage.. - Hannah
