Java Johns County Cafe Opens at Rood Center

A café is back open at the Rood Center! Java Johns County Café had a soft opening this week on the first floor of the Rood Center in Nevada City and is planning a grand opening this Monday, October 23. Hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cafe offers sandwiches, breakfast burritos, salads, soups, snacks, side orders like deviled eggs, fruit, and celery and peanut butter, hot and cold drinks and desserts. Vegan, vegetarian and keto options are available. There are also gluten-free bread, bagels and other snacks. Employees are urged to pre-order lunch by 11 a.m. to beat the rush.

Nevada County Sheriff Pink Patch

Sheriff, Probation Join Pink Patch Project

The Nevada County Sheriff's Office, Probation Department and other local law enforcement and fire agencies will sell pink patches October 26 at Sierra Mountain Coffee Roasters in Grass Valley to raise money for breast cancer research. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 671 Maltman Drive, Suite 3. They will sell a pink law enforcement patch or keychain for $10 and a challenge coin for $20 or a Nevada County Bundle Patch Pack (six patches) for $55.

Supervisors Release Third Quarter Report

The Board of Supervisors has released its report on its progress toward its 2023 objectives. In his "Message From th Chair," Supervisor Ed Scofield looks back at highlights of the last three months, including a new youth commission, progress on consolidation of three fire districts and a thankfully mild fire season.


"All of us here are committed to doing our best to serve the needs of residents." said Scofield. "We will close out the rest of the year focused on this goal."

The Board of Supervisors voted Oct. 10 to postpone partnering with Pioneer Community Energy to procure electricity for residents and businesses of the unincorporated county.

Pioneer Community Energy is a Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) provider, which procures power for its customers in place of the local investor-owned utility, Pacific Gas & Electric.

There is less than a week left to make your opinions known by taking the online Nevada County Community Survey. The survey is available at polco.us/NC23 and is open until this Tuesday, Oct. 23.


The survey asks 44 questions and takes 20 minutes to complete. People under 35 are especially encouraged to participate.


This year’s survey asks residents to rate the county on several factors, including quality of life, economic health and infrastructure.

  • Resolution approving a contract between the County of Nevada and Nevada County Habitat for Humanity to develop and construct an owner-occupied housing project for a lower-income household through the use of $171,000 in California Department of Housing and Community Development's Permanent Local Housing Allocation funds.
  • Resolution adopting language related to the application for grant funds from Cal FIRE for the Woodpecker Ravine Shaded Fuel Break Phase 2 Project and accepting $3.9 million in grant funds.

Public Health Nurse I/II - Temporary - Communicable Diseases

Nevada County’s Public Health Team is currently seeking one part-time, temporary nurse to be an integral part of the Communicable Disease (CD) team.


The Public Health Department promotes the health of the entire community through varied programs including control of communicable diseases and coordination of the response to health emergencies, to individual case management, primary prevention of disease, and wellness promotion.


This position provides support by addressing various aspects of the COVID-19 reporting and response along with other communicable disease investigations. Additionally, our CD Nurses provide support related to infection control in the county’s congregate care settings, skilled nursing facilities, and assisted living facilities. Our ideal team member will qualify at one of the following levels:


  • Registered Nurse I or II
  • Public Health Nurse I or II


Looking for work-life balance? This position is temporary, part-time. A temporary, part-time employee works on average 20-24 hours but not more than 29 hours per week. Nevada County offers flexible schedules to our staff based on the needs of the department and program.
