New Bear River Library to Open in February

Nevada County's Bear River Library location is moving to a new home in February with expanded services for the south county community. For the past two decades, the county library has shared space in the Bear River High School library, a large room that accommodated both the high school collection and a collection of Nevada County Library materials. Now, it is moving to a shopping center adjacent to Lake of the Pines.

Public Health vending machine

Public Health Launches Health Access Vending Machine Program in Truckee

Nevada County Public Health Department, through grant funding from Anthem Blue Cross, has launched a Health Access Vending Machine Program. One machine is now in Truckee and another will be in Grass Valley in January and North San Juan in the spring. These machines offer free products such as fentanyl test strips, adult and children's oral health kits, and hygiene kits. "We are excited to be providing the residents of Nevada County with easier access to critical health products,” said Nevada County Health Officer Sherilynn Cooke. “We care about the health of kids and families in our community."

Four participants in 2023 Nevada County Mentorship Program

Employees Complete Mentorship Program

The Mentorship Program was developed by Nevada County’s Organizational Excellence Council (OEC) in 2020 and lasted six months. Two mentees were strategically paired with their mentors who could help them accomplish their professional goals. Participants were Cindy Hunt (Human Resources, mentee), Desiree Belding (Information & General Services, mentor), Matthew McDermott (Assessor’s Office, mentee), and Steve Monaghan, (Director of Information & General Services Agency, mentor).

Bikers in the Heart of Gold Gravel Race

Heart of Gold Raises $90,000 for Local Groups that Support Youth Mental Wellness

The results are in! The third annual Heart of Gold Gravel Race held on October 7 raised more than $90,000 for awareness and support of teen mental wellness programs. 


The race featured 250 cyclists from across the West with the course spanning the backroads and steep river canyons of Nevada County. The race covered multi-terrain, including gravel, dirt, and, at times, paved roads. The race began and ended at the Rood Center in Nevada City and was spearheaded by Supervisor Hardy Bullock.

Supervisor Heidi Hall

Supervisor Hall Leads Discussion on Fire Insurance, Emergency Planning

Supervisor Heidi Hall took a leadership role at the California State Association of Counties’ annual meeting in November in Alameda County.


She moderated the panel "Fire Insurance Crisis: How We Got Here and Where We're Going." She also led a discussion on "Emergency Management: Planning, Evacuation, and Post-Disaster Action."
