Three Women Honored at Women's History Month Tea in Grass Valley

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Nevada County Supervisors honored three women leaders on Friday with awards. Pat Leach, Diana Gamzon, and Mackenzie Rist received their awards from Supervisors Sue Hoek, Heidi Hall, and Lisa Swarthout at a ceremony at the LOVE Building in Grass Valley. “We have incredible women in our community who have helped shape Nevada County to be the great place it is,” said Swarthout, who kicked off the awards. “The three women honored here today for their work and dedication have made Nevada County a better place for us all."

Nevada County Supervisors Set Action Plan to Advance Board Objectives

County of Nevada staff outlined an ambitious work plan in support of the Board of Supervisors' 2024 objectives, which reflect community priorities. The eight objectives include fiscal stability and core services, emergency preparedness, economic development, broadband, climate resilience, housing, homelessness, and recreation. On Tuesday, Supervisors discussed proposed budgets for each of the eight objectives.

Nevada County needs your input on recommendations for the draft Recreation & Resiliency Master Plan (Master Plan), now available for public feedback. Throughout 2023, community input was received on recreation needs and opportunities through a variety of surveys and outreach. The Master Plan is a summary of ideas and information provided by community and agency stakeholders, residents, and visitors, along with recommendations that may enhance recreation access, support health and safety, preserve natural resources, and increase economic vitality.

Less than 3,000 Ballots Left to Count from Presidential Primary Election

As of Tuesday night, 2,889 Nevada County ballots remain to be counted from the March 5, 2024, Presidential Primary Election. The updated tally shows that 49.54 percent or 36,759 of Nevada County’s 74,201 registered voters cast ballots in the election.

Public Health Emergency Preparedness team facilitated a hospital evacuation workshop at Tahoe Forest Hospital on March 7. A planning team of eight medical & emergency response partners from both Nevada County and Washoe County worked together over the span of several weeks and dozens of hours to bring one cohesive curriculum to the hospital.

CalFresh households that lost food due to the storms and power outages on March 1 are encouraged to apply for replacement benefits by April 1. The application for replacement benefits can be completed online, at any of Nevada County's Social Services Offices, or by fax, mail, or phone.

Interfaith Food Ministry: Call for Volunteers

Two types of volunteer drivers are needed! Grocery store drivers would use their personal vehicles to pick up donated food from grocery stores and deliver it to Interfaith Food Ministry. Truck drivers would require a basic Class C license to use Interfaith Ministry's truck to pick up food from various locations. Both volunteer positions include training and flexible schedules.

Tahoe National Forest Developing Multi-Use Trail Connecting Nevada City and Truckee

Tahoe National Forest’s Pines to Mines Trail will welcome equestrians, pedestrians, bicyclists, and Class 1 e-bike users on the new 72-mile trail network. The trail’s development aims to increase national forest recreation access for multiple user groups and abilities while supporting local economic development. Pines to Mines will include approximately 50 miles of existing trail, with 22 miles of new trail planned to begin construction this year.

Leading the Effort to Open an Emergency Warming Shelter in Truckee: Jazmin Breaux

In October, the alarming news came out – the nonprofit that had run Truckee’s emergency warming shelter for the last eight years couldn’t do the job anymore. Other nonprofits contacted in the region weren’t able to take on the task. Truckee’s below-freezing temperatures were on the way, and something had to be done. “I was asked if I would take it on,” said Jazmin Breaux, a Health and Human Services program manager funded by Nevada and Placer counties. “Who else was going to do it?”
