FROM THE COUNTY

In March 2024, the Nevada County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a two-year Economic Development Action Plan that will serve as a playbook for the County and its local and regional partners. The plan outlines an economic development vision that is fundamentally about creating a thriving community for all. It will encompass programs, policies, and activities that drive sustainable economic prosperity, social equity, and community well-being.

The plan can be found on the County of Nevada website under the Economic Development Department. You can also click on the link below.

To schedule a presentation of the plan with your group, please contact the Economic Development Office at (530) 470-2795.

TOUR OF NEVADA COUNTY

Tour of Nevada County Showcases Extraordinary Local Businesses!

Recently, the Nevada County Economic Development Resource Council hosted the Tour of Nevada County. The sold-out event attendees visited five fascinating and diverse business sites. For most, they were not aware these businesses were in Nevada County.

The group visited Brew Built Manufacturing, Sols Learning, the future home of InConcert Sierra, Living in Tents Yurt Co., and Bodhi Hive.  They also visited historic downtown Grass Valley with lunch on Mill Street.

This year, the newly formed Nevada County Youth Commission, led by Jeff Dellis, joined the tour. Thirteen future leaders were able to see firsthand the diversity, innovation, and excellence of business in our county.

Congratulations to the ERC staff and Board. Much appreciation to the Nevada County Board of Realtors, River Valley Community Bank, El Barrio for lunch, and the many supporters and attendees of the tour.

BUSINESS PREPAREDNESS

Legal Structure for Your Business

(con't from Part 1 in the April e-newsletter).

Part 2 - Steps to Take When Setting up Your Legal Structure

Setting up the appropriate legal structure for a new business involves several steps:

1.    Research considerations: Begin by researching the different legal structures available (such as sole proprietorship, LLC, partnership, C Corp, S Corp) and consider the specific needs and goals of your business. Factors to consider include liability protection, tax implications, management structure, and ownership flexibility.

2.     Consult with professionals: Seek guidance from legal and financial professionals, such as lawyers, accountants, or business advisors, who can provide personalized advice based on your unique situation. They can help you understand the legal and tax implications of each structure and recommend the most suitable option for your business.

3.    Choose the legal structure: Based on your research and consultations, select the legal structure that best aligns with your business objectives. Consider factors such as liability protection, tax treatment, ease of formation, and administrative requirements.

4.    Register your business: Once you've chosen a legal structure, you'll need to register your business with the appropriate government authorities. This typically involves filing paperwork with the state or local government, obtaining necessary licenses or permits, and fulfilling any other regulatory requirements.

5.    Obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN): Regardless of the legal structure chosen, most businesses will need to obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). An EIN is a unique identifier for your business and is used for tax purposes, such as filing tax returns and opening a business bank account.

6.    Fulfill ongoing requirements: Depending on the chosen legal structure, there may be ongoing compliance requirements, such as annual filings, tax payments, or maintaining corporate records. Stay informed about these obligations and ensure timely compliance to maintain the legal status of your business.

By following these steps and seeking professional guidance, you can set up the appropriate legal structure for your new business, laying a solid foundation for future growth and success.

CELEBRATING BUSINESS IN NEVADA COUNTY

MAK’s BBQ is celebrating their Grand Opening Weekend on May 31st and June 1st!

MAK’s, located at 10128 Alta Sierra Dr. in Grass Valley, is hosting its BBQ in the parking lot, while the service works out of the kitchen.

MAK’s was started by Andrew and Kim, a couple who worked together to launch their business dreams. Andrew, the pit master, has nearly 10 years of backyard BBQ experience, learning everything he could about what makes the best BBQ. Kim joined the journey when she met Andrew in 2021.

Enjoying those backyard BBQs and encouraging Andrew to pursue his dream of opening his own BBQ business, Kim jumped in to get the idea off the ground and provided support where needed.

MAK’s provides BBQ meats enriched with a smokey flavor that only low and slow cooking can accomplish. Their made-from-scratch dry rubs and sauce add the perfect amount of twang to every bite.

Their menu includes pulled pork, brisket, pork ribs, and chicken. They also offer monthly specialty meats like dino beef ribs and turkey breast. Their sides, including BBQ beans, street corn in a bowl, and banana pudding, are the perfect complement to the meat feast!

Check out their pre-order system, which will help you avoid walk-up and wait lines and guarantee you get the meat you want. Please note, that this location currently offers no seating.

In the future, look for party platters and catering options.

California Small Business Loan Match Program

The California Small Business Loan Match Program is a new lender-match initiative provided by California Infrastructure and Economic Development Bank’s (IBank’s) Small Business Finance Center, as an extension of their Loan Guarantee Program.

It aims to simplify the process for entrepreneurs in California to find and secure suitable loans. This program functions as a bridge, connecting business owners with an array of lenders pre-vetted and enrolled in IBank's Loan Guarantee Program, ensuring reliable and fair lending practices.

The process begins with a brief pre-application that does not affect the applicant's credit score. Once submitted, the program matches the applicant with potential lenders based on their business needs and eligibility.

Details about each lender and their loan offerings are available, allowing applicants to choose which lender to engage with further. The chosen lender will then contact the applicant to proceed with the application process, which includes a review of additional documentation and the establishment of loan terms suitable for the business.

The program also includes resources and technical assistance for those who do not immediately qualify for a loan, encouraging them to reapply as new lenders and loan products are continually integrated into the platform.

For more detailed information and to start the application process, you can visit their website at Home | California Small Business Loan Match (caloanmatch.org).
