Why are business retention and expansion programs vital?

The success of our businesses is a top priority of Nevada County's Economic Development Office. The health of existing businesses is proof of the economic vitality of a community.

In collaboration with our regional economic partners, our goal is to help you reach your potential. When we meet with companies and small business owners, we want to hear about business opportunities and challenges so we can connect you to the resources that can best meet your needs.

The Nevada County Economic Development Office just celebrated our first year. During that time, we assisted 143 businesses, nonprofits, and agencies with a wide range of needs. Whether you are new to business and just need help getting started, are trying to navigate through the county processes, are looking at potential tax credits or funding, or want to make connections with other businesses or regional services, we are here to help.

Good to Know

California Division of Occupational Safety and Health

Protect Your Employees

The Division of Occupational Safety and Health better known as Cal/OSHA is reminding all employers to protect outdoor workers from heat illness as temperatures rise.

Cal/OSHA’s heat illness prevention standard applies to all outdoor worksites. To prevent heat illness, the law requires employers to provide outdoor workers fresh water, access to shade at 80 degrees and, whenever requested by a worker, cool-down rest breaks in addition to regular breaks. Employers must also maintain a written prevention plan with effective training for supervisors to recognize the common signs and symptoms of heat illness, and what to do in case of an emergency.

In certain industries, when the temperature at outdoor worksites reaches

or exceeds 95 degrees, Cal/OSHA’s standard requires additional protections. The industries with additional high-heat requirements are agriculture, construction, landscaping, oil and gas extraction and transportation of agricultural products, construction materials or other heavy materials. High-heat procedures include ensuring employees are observed regularly for signs of heat illness and establishing effective communication methods so workers can contact a supervisor when needed.

Employers with outdoor workers in all industries must take the following steps to prevent heat illness:

  • Plan – Develop and implement an effective written heat illness prevention plan that includes emergency response procedures.
  • Training – Train all employees and supervisors on heat illness prevention.
  • Water – Provide drinking water that is fresh, pure, suitably cool and free of charge so that each worker can drink at least one quart per hour and encourage workers to do so.
  • Rest – Encourage workers to take a cool-down rest in the shade for at least five minutes when they feel the need to do so to protect themselves from overheating. Workers should not wait until they feel sick to cool down.
  • Shade – Provide proper shade when temperatures exceed 80 degrees. Workers have the right to request and be provided shade to cool off at any time.

Details on heat illness prevention requirements and training materials are available online at OSHA Heat Prevention Website

The California Air Resources Board (CARB), in partnership with CALSTART, launched the Clean Off-Road Equipment Voucher Incentive Project (CORE) to accelerate the purchase of zero-emission off-road equipment in California.

CORE, analogous to the Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP), is a project intended to encourage California companies to purchase or lease currently commercialized zero-emission off-road freight equipment by providing a streamlined voucher process to offset the higher cost of such technologies.

CORE voucher amounts are based on the incremental cost difference between traditional equipment and new zero-emission alternatives. Additional funding is available for charging infrastructure, equipment deployed in pollution-overburdened communities (DACs), and equipment purchased by small businesses.

Tourism

Visit California Team Tours the Gold Country

Visit California, the official tourism and travel organization for the state, is beginning an 18-month regional tourism strategic plan of the Gold Country which includes western Nevada County. A team visited in early August for a sample tour of our recreational, cultural, and tourism related business assets.

Their Regional Advisory Committee held its first meeting this month and the Nevada County Economic Development Office is participating. Throughout their process, we will reach out to get input from our local stakeholders. The result of their strategic efforts should provide a roadmap about how we might approach tourism in the future. Please email kimberly.parker@nevadacountyca.gov to learn more or to be included in the process at a local level.
