Each year, the Chatham Area Chamber of Commerce awards scholarships to three local graduating seniors. The students receive a $1,000 scholarship to be applied to the college or university of their choice.
There have been some updates made to our application this year. For the first time, students will complete and submit the application online. Also, and more significantly, the Chatham Chamber Board of Directors voted to classify our scholarships as a member benefit, thus opening the scholarships to all high school seniors who meet the following qualifications:
- They must reside in Sangamon County; and
- They or their parent/guardian must be employed by a Chatham Area Chamber member
Applications will be blind-reviewed based on a combination of academic achievement, volunteer and/or work experience, and essay/response regarding the Chatham Chamber and its work.
All applications must be submitted online by 5 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2024.

HeplerBroom, LLC
Congratulations to HeplerBroom, LLC, for being chosen the Chatham Area Chamber of Commerce's Member of the Month for February!
Firm’s History
The HeplerBroom law firm, as it is known today, began in 1894 in Edwardsville, Illinois, when William G. Burroughs opened Burroughs & Bro. law firm. From its two-lawyer beginning, the firm has grown to become one of the larger law firms in Illinois. Its nearly 100 attorneys offer legal expertise in more than 40 practice areas, with offices in six locations (Edwardsville, Springfield, Chicago, Crystal Lake, and DuPage County, Illinois; St. Louis, Missouri; and Hammond, Indiana). After several name changes over the years, in 2007 the partners decided to “brand” the firm by changing the name to HeplerBroom, LLC.
Springfield Office
HeplerBroom’s Springfield office opened in 2007 as a temporary location to facilitate the handling of a major case for the Illinois Department of Transportation. By the middle of 2008, the client base had expanded enough to warrant it becoming a permanent location. Today its attorneys focus on Environmental, Employment & Labor Law, Government Affairs, Medical and Healthcare Malpractice, Personal Injury, and Estate Planning and Probate issues.
Industry Leaders
Over the years, the expertise and skills of the firm’s attorneys have been recognized in numerous ways.
- One of its early partners became a Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court.
- Two of its attorneys served as national president of the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys.
- One served as national president of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel.
- Ten of the firm’s members have served as presidents of state defense trial attorney associations in Illinois and Missouri.
- A number have served as presidents of regional and local bar associations.
- Various partners have been chosen as fellows in highly selective national trial attorney organizations such as the American College of Trial Lawyers.
- One of its current partners was a former Director of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
- The firm has received the highest ratings from companies such as Martindale-Hubbell and U.S. News & World Report.
Chamber Supporters
The Chatham Area Chamber of Commerce is fortunate to have one of HeplerBroom’s partners, Michael Murphy, serve on our Board. He and his colleagues have provided hours of pro bono work related to updating policies and procedures. HeplerBroom has been supportive of the Chamber in other ways as well, such as donating furniture for the Chamber's new office and sponsoring many Chamber events that help support area businesses and organizations.
The Chatham Area Chamber of Commerce is honored to name HeplerBroom as its Member of the Month for February!
